.243 WSSM Anybody tried this?

A few guys in the Burns Lake area are experimenting with that cartridge for the 1000yrd shoot in the spring. So far looks like it should shoot as well as the 6-284's which are quite impressive at 1000.

Hi Winchester,

Thanks for the information.
Do you know what type of setup they are shooting the .243 WSSM through? ie. Are they using F Class equipment?

I have a one in a Winchester m70, coyote with a heavy barrel, It will shoot 1/2 inch at 100 yards with handloads but in my opinion it is quite a small pill for cross winds at those kinds of ranges. Also, I dont think there is any 6mm pill which can compare with the ballistic coefficient of a .338 or300 long range bullet. That being said, I like mine because it is fun and doesn't kick.

More importantly I think if I was putting 100+ grains of powder into a case like some of the 300 and 338 cases, I would go through powder in a hurry.

cheaper bullets, less powder, less bang, less kick, pretty accurate, that's my ideal rifle.

I have a A-Bolt Varmint 24 inch medium heavy barrel... in 25WSSM.
It is the most accurate factory rifle I own. I have shot the 243WSSM version as well it too is a very accurate long range varminter.

Hi Milo,

Thanks for the real world experience and comments.
The reason I am asking about this cartridge is that the link I have attached at Sniper Country suggests that the .243WSSM does have superior ballistic coeficient than no only .223 & .308, they are suggesting it is better than .300 mag and .338.
I guess I am trying to determine if anyone has tried this at 1000 yards and have the found the ballistics up to speed with the .300 & .308.
While I am reading that it does, I find it a bit difficult to believe.
Mind you, it wouldn't be the first time I was wrong.

.243 WSSM blows the bloody doors of .308 for long range shooting, and keeps up with at least the .300 Mag as far as supersonic range for use on paper. I'm building a 7mm WSSM, and can't wait to shoot it! :)

Boyd Heaton and his daughter have been known to tear up the Williamsport competitons with his 6.5 Heaton, a necked up 25WSSM with a shoulder change and tight neck.
The thing realls shoots.
I have a standard neck 6.5WSSM reamer that I am about to shoot over to rangesports Unlimited along with one of my 6.5WSM rifle to get rechambered.
It should be lots of fun with a 107 Alberta Wildcat comming out the barrel!

It's actually not that bad at all, really standard throat erosion. The .22-250 is probably just as bad or worse, which is to say totally accetable and within reason. This shouldn't influence your decision one bit in my opinion if accuracy and performance are your main concerns. If you're after longevity, pick up a .45-70 or .30-30. :p :D

I shot Milo's 243 WSSM a few weeks ago. Afterwards I told him I'd buy it from him if he wanted to sell it. What a great gun to shoot. At 200 yards it was deadly acurate. Very little recoil, a nice bang and just overall very pleasant and rewarding to shoot. I don't know how it would be for long distance. I'm guessing any wind would mess up the shot a lot more than that of a 308 or 300. I'm considering a 7mm ultra mag for 1000 yards.

No, .243 WSSM does better in wind than either .308 or .300 Mag. :) The bullet has a higher ballistic coefficient than the .30's and a high velocity, 6mm/.243" is one of the top 1000 yard bore cals going. As a matter of fact, .243 WSSM with a 105 or 107gr VLD like an AMAX or MK should have a 1900 yard supersonic range (effective range for all intents and purposes on targets/varmints) out of a long range length tube.

Certainly seems like this would be an excellent calibre for F Class.
Excellent ballistic coefficient, light recoil, doesn't kill barrels like 6.5x284.
Could be a winner. :D

Ardent: Really? I thought it was pretty bad on barrels...you're right though. Accuracy and performance are #1, but after deciding that certain factors like ammo cost & availability and barrel life do matter.

Yep, really. :) A plain old .22-250 with standard varmint type bullets eats barrels faster. WSSM's are pretty tame, with .223 WSSM being the roughest on bores, which is still played up too much. .243 WSSM isn't hard on barrels really, as it shoots heavier bullets at sensible velocities, nothing exciting as far as eating barrels, really ordinary. :)

I am building one on a Rem 700 SA. 1-8" twist, throated out for the 115 gr Bergers. I am hoping to gain stability though velocity. The barrel that I am using was my 6 br for 2 years and shot amazingly well.
