.243 WSSM good?

the 243 wssm would be a good choice for long range coyote hunting, with some deer hunting mixed in. I dont like the current ammo options though

55 gr NBT - low BC = wind drift at long range

95 gr NBT - ok for coyote but too fragile for deer at high speeds

100 gr PP - I wouldnt trust these on deer either

the 243 WSSM needs a Federal Premium TSX 85 gr. load, and Nosler needs to make some Accubonds in 6mm

If I owned one, Id load it that way for deer, and probably 80 gr NBT for yotes and wolves. :)

I ended up buying Foxbat's 243WSSM, from a buddy of mine. After the first time shooting it, I told milo I'd buy it if he ever wanted to sell the rifle. I was really happy when he sold it to me. I did get the feeling that he didn't want to sell it, but he's a good guy (milo on these forums).
That being said, the ammo choice was only part of the reason I liked it. I didn't already own a 243 and I have no experience in loading my own ammo. So, for me the 243 WSSM was a nice choice. I can nuke varmints or do long distance target shooting. Perhaps I'm wrong but the shorter action of the WSSM should help with accuracy, and the ballistic charts show it to be pretty decent.

Now the other part of the package is the actual rifle. It's a Winchester M70 Coyote, with blued semi bull barrel and a nice laminate stock. The rifle is beautiful. The trigger was done so it breaks at around 2 pounds.

I've always wanted a Winchester model 70 and it's kind of nice to be shooting a unique ammo rather than the same as everyone else.
As for accuracy I haven't had a lot of time to experiment, but with the limited shooting I have done with this rifle, the holes are touching if not in the same hole at 100 metres. Thats with a Simmons mag40 (6.5-20x) and regular non match ammo (using sandbags for benchrest)

While my next purchase will probably be the Remington XR100 in 22-250. The 243WSSM Winchester M70 won't be leaving my safe (unless I'm going to shoot it).If you don't already have a 243 then I'd look at the 243WSSM. Check out reviews on this round, it's very versatile. With the extra accuracy of the super short action, and the extra FPS, I don't really see what's not to like about it.

Here's an excellent article on the 243 WSSM. http://www.gunsandammomag.com/reloads/gar0504/#cont

243 WSSM or as I call it 6mm Super Short

I run this on a 700 SA with a 1-8 smith barrel. Throated for the 115 gr Berger VLD. Velocity is 3100 fps with 42 gr Varget. This maintains 1/4 MOA groups @ 300 yds. I am still waiting to get this out to 1000 yds. It has achieved my goal of running the 115 grnr @ over 3000 fps and I am very happy with the performance.
