So I got the girlfriend a savage Axis 243win. She really likes shooting it. she has shown a lot of interest in hunting. So she went a did her CORE. She was with me last fall when we took a big black. Now with spring bear around the corner. She wants a bear of her own.

my question is what do you think about a 243win loaded with 100g Partitions? I will be with her with a bigger rifle incase something hairy arises.
I have killed a few bear with a 30-06. I don't find them overly hard to kill.
my opinion is a 100g partition threw the boiler room will be plenty.
just what to hear what you guys got to say.
 
While I believe that it could be done with the right bullet and proper shot placement, I prefer something bigger to help make up when the shot doesn't go as planned. Field accuracy isn't as good as from a bench and #### happens in the field. There's no replacement for displacement is a phrase that comes to mind.

I only shoot from a bench when sighting in of load testing.
other then that we shoot from "field" positions.
offhand she is accurate to 100yrds.
 
Her 243win., using 100gr partions will have NO problems at all taking a Black Bear. Like all hunting, making a good shot is more important than what caliber was used. A gut shot bear will not die any quicker if you shot it with a 45-70 or a 243 win.

I have shot several Black bears, including a pretty decent size specimen, with a 6mm Remington and the 100 Partition.
Shots varied from 40 yards out to 165. None of the Bears went far after the shot. [All heart/lung placements]

The 243 is essentially the same, performance-wise, so I would anticipate no problems in her taking a Blackie with it.

I always use my 7mm Rem. Lot of times cover is pretty heavy and if he get's away, good luck finding him. Bigger hole bleeds better, important with that fur.;)

Interesting that when hunting bears the small calibers are fine but in bear defence threads they are useless.....lol

I'd say with a good bullet and a good shot, she'll be just fine.
 
A bit off-topic but Thinking of bears you should see the nice Bear that wolffowsamoo go with his rossi ranch hand he put pic up on the Wenstalls Mares leg thread

I have Hunting Partners who hunt Moose with a 243 every year
It's more than enough pop for Black bear

That's funny.

However, that being said...a whole lotta difference between shooting a bear 100yds away who doesn't know you are there through the ribs and a pissed off one who is coming at you from 50yds at 50km/hr!
 
The .243 and 100gr partitions will work. I would recommend moving up to a 7mm-08 if she really gets into hunting. Quite a bit more punch with minimal recoil. I would bet she would barely be able to tell the difference in recoil.
 
243 win is far from ideal, but just get her fairly close and as long as she can get a solid rest and put a partition through the boiler room you will be enjoying some great roasts or hams. Just be there ready to back her up, as you want her first animal to be successful and a good experience for her. Then you will have a hunting partner for years to come

Black bears are not thick skinned.

Personally, I've found lighter/faster, and preferrably fragnible bullets to be more effective on black bears than sturdier, deep pentrating bullets. I'd bet a 95 grain ballistic tip into the ribs would absolutely hammer black bears for you.

I've never shot one with any .24 or .25 cal, but a .270 loaded with cheap cup-and-core 130 grain bullets at max velocity (where they shed about 50% of their weight in fragmentation inside the animal), are absolutely deadly on back bears. I've shot quite a few with everything from .270, through 30 cals, to .338 and .375 mags and even 58 cal muzzle loader, and seen many more shot with similar cartridges, and nothing I've ever seen drops them in their tracks with a boiler shot like a .270 loaded as I detailed.
 
guess we will have to put it to the test. I let her read this thread and form her own opinion on weather or not she wants to do it.
She said " I'm not worried. Remember how fast the last one hit the dirt.".
Also ill have the 375Ruger loaded with some 300g Partitions if I need to deal with something.

Now were both itching for the snow to melt.
