I have a bicentennial ruger no 1 in 25-06. Bought it a couple of years ago. Worked up some decent loads using 117 gr sst and hunted with those for a year. 2 inch groups at 100. Meh.
This year I started using 120 gr aframes and experimented with a couple of powders but never got great results. Maybe inch and a half performance. Switched to reloader 22 and bingo, three bullets in the same hole.
Last week while deer hunting it suddenly would not hit the broad side of a barn. 9 inch spead at 100. Thuroughly cleaned the rifle and headed to the range. After a fouling shot it put three in one hole at 100. Half hour later three into 3 inches at 250 yds. Half hour later moved back to 100 with a four inch group. Half hour later I could not hit a 12 inch peice of paper at 250. After just 13 rnds it was useless. What gives? I am thinking a worn out barell? It is 43 years old and I have no idea how many rounds it has seen. The bore never really shines inside, even after a cleaning.

That one seems like a good candidate for Dyna Bore coat. A micro ceramic treatment that can help keep a clean but rough bore clean and slippery, so that jacket material and powder residue doesn't stick. I used it on a few rifles, and saw some results that were encouraging, but best results were with an old mauser in 9x57mm. Bore was dark and fouled like yours after just a few shots. Treated with Dyna Bore coat and it behaved much better and retained useful accuracy longer and cleaned up much quicker. Worth a try, but follow directions to the letter. It doesn't work if you take shortcuts cleaning the bore or applying the product.

First place I look are the action bolts had a tikka that shot awsome then one lug came 1/2 turn loose from shooting then it went for ####. Once I torqued it , back to awe some

Clean the chit out of the barrel - borescope it (best item I've bought) is the crown damaged? Receiver screws torqued to specs or do they loosen up after a few rounds.

How do you KNOW the scope “checks out fine”?

Pull the scope, check your mounting system for cracks and loose screws first. Then put different glass on it and try that. Eliminate ONE variable at a time. If you start changing multiple things at the same time you will be chasing your tail.
