25-06 for Moose

Dunno about 120gr. Grand Slams, but I've taken 4 moose and 1 bull elk with nothing more than 100gr. Partition's out of my 25'06, 2 of the moose were bang flops even the one shot a 300yds.:)

Funny no one who shots a 25'06 seems to see it as too small or un forgiving, but those that have never shot one on larger game sure seem to have an opinion.:confused:
 
I've had several 25-06s. I use them for crows. I should add, in the hands of a decent shot who'll wait for a decent opportunity they'll do anything a 270 will. I just don't think they're the best choice for a less experienced hunter who might want to try any shot presented.

x2....If its all you have to use,choose a well built hunting slug,wait for the perfect shot,dont try any thing fancy and make the first shot count. Nobody wants to chase a wounded moose in the bush. I got my cow moose draw this year and have a .257 WBY sitting here but I am not going to use it just for the simple fact I have from the .340 WBY up to the .460 WBY. The .460 will be used for a moose up to the 200 to 250 yard range and the .340 will be used after that. The only reason for the 460 is the ####s and giggles factor.

I live in east central Alberta in farming land so my shots here could be easily out to 400 + yds. If you have access to borrow a larger rifle I would lean towards doing it. It never hurts to have more horse power then needed...might save a hunt from becoming a nightmare and rodeo....Just my .02 cents worth...
 
We sure get alot of these posts!The fact is the 25/06 is less than ideal for moose,it will work when used with extreme care,as will anything.Seems anytime someone states the obvious,some people get insulted and start the small bore rant!The 25/06 works,but the are better rounds for the task!If light recoil is desired the 350 rem,338/06 and 35 whelen are close to ideal,as the 25/06 is close to ideal for whitetail mulies .

I agree wholeheartedly! I will be the first to admit I have shot big game wih chamberings that were not the best choices, but only when I had a perfect presentation and I could aford to let the animal walk if the presentation did not materialize. There are better moose chamberings than the 25-06. It will work if used carefully. Eagleye.
 
Thanks for the info. This info is not for me. I have a friend with a 25-06 that wants to use it for moose. I went over all the stuff about using a better caliber but he still wants to use his rifle. I have the loading gear and we load at my place. All I can do is make sure a good bullet is being used.
 
the speer 120 grain bullet is the one i use in my 2506.never any troubles. like the others have said bullet placement is the key .
