Good day all

I am thinking of buying a Rifle in 25/06 for Coyote, pronghorn and maybe sheep.
Would this make a good sheep caliber, In your opinion or should I stay with my 30/06 for sheep?

Thanks

In my opinion I think that the spectrum of those three animals is what the 25/06 was ideally created for. I know it can take more with perfect shot placement yada yada, but it's a flat shooting cartridge perfect for medium sized game which makes it one of many ideal cartridges for your intended purposes.

Yes it would but so would the 30-06 you already have, with the very wide selection of bullet weights and styles you can cover all of what you are planning on hunting, now having said that having another gun is cool and so is a 25-06

StevieK is right - your trifecta is exactly what the 25-06 was made for. I want to try the 110gr Accubond in my 25-06 to see what kind of speed I get out of a 26.5" barrel. 3250 might be possible. At that speed, why bother with a 257 Weatherby?

Oh wait...I have one of those too.

Don't rule out the 120 grain Hornady H.P. its a tough, flat shooting extremly accurate bullet, and they are not expensive allowing lots of practice shooting. I have loaded them up to 3350 when I had a .257 weatherby and did not experience excessive meat damage even at close range, they always completly penetrated. I now shoot them in 25-06 with H4831 and would not think twice about using this combo even on moose.

If I owned a .30-06 I would use it for sheep and anything bigger all the way up. I would get something "more different" from the '06 for coyote and pronghorn. My ideal coyote/pronghorn rifle would be one of the 6mm twins.

Long time friend since high school bought his wife this caliber, among many and it's her
go to rifle.
I was there the day she kocked down a moose with it.
We were in the after the shot process when her husband showed up.
Stinky pants that eye am I said to him,
"Pretty bad when the missus brings home the bacon, eh?"
Well the look on his face was priceless.
"Trained her pretty good eh?" was his reply.
There are a number of sheep mounts on her livingroom wall shot with
her 25:06.
That caliber would work well on sheep and would be a good choice.

I have a Remington 700 V in .25.06. Bloodied it on a black bear this year with 120 grain Hornady HP. Apparently the 120 Nosler Partition will go clean through a moose - according to a friend.

I started using the 120 gr Hornady HP in my 25-06 Husqvarna Model 8000 the year I got it. Hornady advertised it as a big game bullet, with delayed expansion and deep penetration.

The first animal I shot with it was a dall ram at fairly close range, around 100 yd, or perhaps a bit more. One shot, in the lungs, exit hole about 3/4 inch, so it performed as advertised. Works great on caribou and moose, too.

Also works, but is a bit light for enraged grizzlies, as a friend of mine in Atlin, BC, can testify. :D

That's crazy talk

nope, sorry, you're all wrong.

The .25-06 is a TERRIBLE choice for sheep. The trajectory is all wrong, the bullet weight is awful. And I think if you were lucky enough to get the weak .257 bullet to come in contact with a sheep, it would just bounce off.

Really, its a terrible choice. Try something different. ANYTHING will do better.

Just kidding. :slap:

I load 100gr TSX @ 3280 f/s in my neighbours 25-06, he has killed a couple stones with it. Works well if you cannot locate a 260 Remington

we have the matter of trajectory. Simply put, no big-game cartridge offered by the major manufacturers shoots flatter than the .257 Weatherby Magnum. When a 100-grain bullet exits the muzzle at 3500 fps and is zeroed three inches high at 100 yards, it is about four inches above point of aim at 200 yards, a couple of inches high at 300 yards, and only about six inches low at 400 yards.
Nothing Shoots Flatter... Nothing Hits Harder than a Weatherby...

Ok all the Commercial Hype and Internet bravo sierra aside the 25:06 can be hot rodded to match the .257 and maybe even faster when fired from a 26 inch pipe.
Really though when you have done your job from stalking to trigger pull to shot placement the critter on the receiving end will not know what hit it.
Buy the gun that turns your crank and fits well with ease of ammo purchase should you forget those two boxes on the coffee table as you rushed out the door at 0400 AM on your trip of a life time.
Tight Groups,
Rob

Rob, there is absolutely no room on the internet for that kind of common sense. You should know better.:D
