25-06 long range

Depends on what you mean by "long range".

I have a 25.06 and love it - might be the flattest shooting "non-magnum" available (although my 6.5 Creed is pretty close).

With a 100 grain bullet you are up around 3300 fps @ the muzzle. It's still over 2k fps and packing almost 1200 foot pounds at 400 yards - more than enough for anything wolf or coyote sized. And if that wasn't enough I would put in two sets of earplugs and use my 257 Wby :)

But yes, if you can make the shot I would call it "easily" a 500'ish yard dog gun...

I think it's a great long range coyote gun. My 75 gr load is similar to Graham's, 3600 fps at the muzzle 2200 fps at 400 yds with just over 800 ft lbs retained at 400 yds. Vertical adjustment at 400 yds when zeroed at 200 yds is only 3.75 moa.

Go with a high BC higher weight projectile and it will smoke those lighter ones once you get "long range" away. :)

115gr VLD , and a Rapid Z reticle, brings things in just a bit closer. ;)

A Remington 700 SS with a pillar bedded Tupperware stock using the 100 grain Barnes TSX and Re22 powder it is just around 3350 fps.
It has been too warm to get much work done on the load and it will be my backup deer rifle if it does not move up to #1.
The temperature has been warm so looking forward to testing during cooler morning hours.
The scope is a Bushnell 6500 2.5 - 16 x 42 with the DOA reticle. Sighted in for 200 meters, the first mark below the crosshair was on at 300 yards.
Ballistically the drop from 220 yards to 300 yards is 4.25".

Interesting, yes this is all what I figured, iv got my heart set on one for a while now and think I'll go with one, and yea as for ling range I'm talking shooting 500 yards, I was shooting 375 with my ruger 204 but when it was a bit windy out I couldn't do much with it so looking for something that will handle wind a bit better, thanks!

I got what I have in 25-06 for long range on preds & varmints but:redface: all I've done with it;), so far, is punch paper.
It's a Savage 112BVSS and I put a 6.5-20 Leupold Long Range scope with varmint reticle on it.

My best accuracy results to date has been using the 117gr Sierra BT.

Pardon the quick made home made target.

Most factory .25-06 rifles have a 1:10 twist, which doesn't quite cut it for the best long range hunting bullets. So yes, while its a capable 500 yard cartridge, it can be seldom used to it's full advantage at what is today considered long range.

As far as hunting goes barrel life is not really an issue. In my experience the number of rounds fired is not as big a factor as how they are shot. I have a .264 Winchester Magnum and try to avoid long strings that heat the barrel up. Barrel erosion is much worse when a barrel is very hot and shooting continues in my mind anyway. Also the very hottest loads are rarely the most accurate.

I've taken coyotes out to 750 yards with mine. 117 sst hit harder way out there than my 75 gr Vmax though. With the vmax I've taken coyotes at 660 yards 610 yards and the last long shot was 552 yards.
I've got 1900 or so rounds thru mine and it's a solid 1" 5 shot group at 100 yards with the 75 gr Vmax. However my 117 gr Hornady interlock load is now 1.75" ish. It used to be .75". My barrel hasn't lived the coolest life either. I remember burning my arm on it more than once

I've only just recently got into shooting 25-06 rifles

I have a Rem 700 XCR 11 my coyote/wolf load are 90gr Blitzkings @ 3400fps.

I also have a shortened to 24" T/C Prohunter in 25-06 but only use this one for hunting deer with 120gr Speer bullets @ 3050fps.

The .25 cals are often overlooked for more common 6mm and 7mm cartridges. It's a really nice caliber that is very explody with the lighter bullets, and has fantastic penetration and damage with the heavier premium bullets (bonded/barnes/partition).
I wanted a .25 for quite a while, and when the VG2's were on sale I was able to snag a .257wby for $500 from Cabela's. It doesn't do much more then the 25/06 does, but I do find it easy to dial in a velocity I'm after with a particular bullet, and still maintain respectable accuracy.

I've seen a bull moose taken with a 25-06 at 600 yds using a Ruger Mk II , 12x scope, and a 100gr Moly coated X bullet. The shooter used his skidoo seat as a rest, and shot across a frozen lake as the moose he spotted was about to leave the lake into the trees. He hit it in the back of the head and the bull dropped there. I still to this day have not seen a better shooter than my friend. (in a hunting situation. )
