25-06 or 270

Ive shot the 25-06 a bit but don't care for it. 243 is better on the light end and 270 is better on the other. My vote is 270

.260 or 6.5x55 would make a great deer rifle...

Of your choices, the .270 will do all and more than the .25-06. The .25 is a good one, but the .270 is better if you already have a varmint rifle...

also if you're going on a trip to hunt moose/elk and take the 300 as your main rifle, a 270 is more suited to the role of backup than the 25-06. Properly loaded the 270 isn't too far behind a 300 Mag for on game performance.

or if on a trip only for deer (as per the original post) you could take your
25-06 and use your 22-250 for back-up ... although Tod might concur, the 22-250 with 60 gr. Partitions might be a little too much gun for "flat tops". Reportedly, he prefers the Fireball ;) :D

I would personally go for the 270 myself; but then again I never would have gotten a 300 mag, so we obviously have different tasts. As far as 270 having a better bullet selection, I don't think so. If there is a person out there that thinks that any caliber between 224 and 308 has a shortage of bullets, it's a problem with the person, not the caliber.

if you go with a 25-06 get it with a 24in barrel not 22in there a great long range round and you can shoot anything from squirrels to moose.

For the use you describe, I would use my 6.5/06, but cannot recommend it as it is a handloading proposition only. Therefore, I would recommend the .270 because of the availability of ammunition and selection of bullets if you are a handloader.

22-250 to a 300... if you want a moderate recoil and a deer cartridge, look at the 260, 6.5x55 or 6.5x284. If it was me and only 3, the 6.5x284 seems to be a well rounded Rig.

But to answer your question, i would go 270....from those 2

25-06 sounds about perfect to me....but then again I just received my new 25-06 in the mail ;)

This is going to be my goto gun this fall for everything even moose if I get drawn...the 30-06 is going to stay in the safe this year.

I have both, used the 25-06 for 6 years, and decided I wasnt getting adequate penetration with standard bullets and went to the 270 where conventional bullets did give good penetration. Also to get factory velocities you need a 24 inch barrel in 2506, but 22 in will work with the 270. My preference is the 270.

If you handload - 25-06 gets my vote - I own a 25-06 and a 25-06AI - LOVe the quarter bores myself - they just seem to shoot better for me. I also own a .270 - it's okay - accurate also - and - if you're in a bind and can't reload ammo for some reason (say your'e away frmo home and forgot your ammo at home) 270 win is BY FAR the easiest round of the two choices to locate ammo for.

So - if you handload - 25-06, if you don't then 270.
