25-06 or 30-06

Blasphemous as it may sound.

It could be; you never know what tomorrow brings. I'm glad my father didn't take a season off - he passed away in February, 3 months after our last hunt. He wasn't able to walk much, but I am very grateful for his company on that hunt.

Just a thought but if you really wanna hunt this soon after such major surgery, grab the .22 and be the camp Bullcook and ditch chicken shooter extrordinaire :) You get to take it easy in camp and still be an important part of the team. Still want to get a crack at the big stuff? Set up a ground blind and use a crossbow. Beats taking the season off.

I'd go with a 260 or 7mm08. You might be surprised how much recoil is generated just by the amount and type of powder used - a 7mm08 shooting 150 grainers at 2700fps with 40 grains of powder will be significantly lower recoilling than a 30-06 loaded to this level with 65 grains

You can't get a moose gun with much less recoil that 25-06 with either Barnes or Nosler 110gr bullet.
Both have excellent 110gr 25 caliber bullets which can be driven at 3000fps.
Using these bullets and good bullet placement, 25-06 is adequate for elk and moose.

6.5x55 160gr is better but also has more recoil...

If you have to have either 25/06 or30/06 go with the 25/06 it will do the job just fine as long as you take your time and ensure good shot placement. That being said I shoot a 280 and find no noticeable recoil and also find the 6.5x55 I bought for my daughter to use on moose really light on recoil, and it worked well for her first moose(http://www.canadiangunnutz.com/forum/showthread.php?t=290738). You have got lots of good advise here so now you have to sort through it and pick something your comfortable with. Good luck and have fun.
