25-06 or 30-06

For big game, I'd go 30/06 over the 25/06, however you are missing some nice light recoiling calibers that split the difference because they don't use the 30/06 case. IE: 257 Roberts, 260 Rem., and esp. the 7mm/08, 7mm Mauser...If you reload just go with the 30/06 and load them down a bit!!IMHO

I would go with the 30-06 and load a 150 grain partition to ~2800 fps. Dependent on the weight of the rifle you are looking at recoil should be fairly mild and you should be good to go on moose out to the far side of 250 yards if need be.

If only deer were on the menu the 25-06 loaded with a 100 grain Scirocco @ ~3000 fps would be my first choice.

You know, I don't know when you had your surgery, but you might want to consider writing this season off. Happened to my Dad a few years ago and he's fine now. But why take a chance at injuring yourself? Tag along with the other guys and enjoy the hunt, but don't take unnecessary chances.

I see that you have 338/06 in your handle. If you still have it ? The 25/06 is the one you want. My boys were 13 yrs old when they shot their first moose and deer with one. Hardly any recoil felt.

Ok, if no-one else is going to say this then I will. You Are worried about splitting open your Chest due to recoil, yet you have narrowed yourself to 2 cartridges that are actually quite heavy for recoil in their respective calibres. All for the fact that you have the reloading supplies for them already? I'm sorry but that is pathetic! If you are truly that worried about your sternum tearing apart then I think you would not be hesitant to spend the $40 on a new set of dies. I would get a 308, it has lower recoil, can handle all of the game you have mentioned, and if you already have bullets to load for the 30-06 you can use them in a 308 instead.

You do know it is a very easy matter to download the 30-06 to 308 levels don't you? The 150 grain 30-06 load I mentioned earlier is actually duplicates a mild 308 Winchester load.

The old '06 can also be brought down to 300 Savage or even 30-30 levels - both cartridges that have killed thousands of moose here in Canada.

The same thing can be said for the 25-06 which can be taken down to 250 Savage levels if desired.

A 308 does not have less recoil than a 25-06. A typical hunting rifle with a 100gr bullet going 3250 fps has about 10 ft/lbs of recoil. A 30-30 with 150gr bullets going about 2400 fps has about the same. A 308 has significantly more unless you download it a good amount which is of course something you can also do with the 30-06. The 25-06 can of course also be downloaded to have even less than 10 ft/lbs recoil.

This. ^^^^^ but if I have to choose a firearm the 2506, though a 6.5/55 or 260 rem would be a better choice.

Have u considered some of the 6.5mm cartridges ? I've heard lots of great things about the 6.5 .284 and the .260 rem which both shoot 140gr bullets(25-06 tops at 120gr) with very forgivinging recoil

Out of the two you named I'd go with the 25-06 and premium bullets. Recoil is more or less nothing according to my daughters who probably don't weigh more than 70 pounds each.

Would takeing the season off be the end of the world?

man a couple of years ago i broke two ribs out of my sternum and like two weeks after that i shot my buddys 30 06 with a limbsaver pad. it hurt... a lot. i dont remember what we where shooting grain or powder wise. but go with the 25 06 and tone it down. have you shot anything since your surgery?

No I haven't shot anything I have to wait till I have the ok from the doctor before I can shoot yet.

yea thats smart i was being young and dumb and did it anyway... id be tempted to borrow a 30 30 or a small caliber gun for this season. some thing that once you get the ok you can take to a range and kinda ease back into shooting. im far from an expert in recoil but that pretty much what i did just slowly worked my way up as i could with out hurting myself. that way you can buy the 30 06 and have it for next season
