I noticed 338 06 in you'r handle , if you have one you may consider a threaded muzzle break . Turn it into a pussycat . Also much cheaper than another rifle .
.30-06 is a great cartridge, but with 60% more recoil than the .25-06, its not for someone who just had open heart surgery.
I would get a 308, it has lower recoil, can handle all of the game you have mentioned, and if you already have bullets to load for the 30-06 you can use them in a 308 instead.
Ok, if no-one else is going to say this then I will. You Are worried about splitting open your Chest due to recoil, yet you have narrowed yourself to 2 cartridges that are actually quite heavy for recoil in their respective calibres. All for the fact that you have the reloading supplies for them already? I'm sorry but that is pathetic! If you are truly that worried about your sternum tearing apart then I think you would not be hesitant to spend the $40 on a new set of dies. I would get a 308, it has lower recoil, can handle all of the game you have mentioned, and if you already have bullets to load for the 30-06 you can use them in a 308 instead.
You know, I don't know when you had your surgery, but you might want to consider writing this season off. Happened to my Dad a few years ago and he's fine now. But why take a chance at injuring yourself? Tag along with the other guys and enjoy the hunt, but don't take unnecessary chances.
man a couple of years ago i broke two ribs out of my sternum and like two weeks after that i shot my buddys 30 06 with a limbsaver pad. it hurt... a lot. i dont remember what we where shooting grain or powder wise. but go with the 25 06 and tone it down. have you shot anything since your surgery?
