25-06 or the 243win

I agonized over the same choice a few years ago and bought the 243, but mostly because a used Win 70 with a long heavy barrel showed up at the local gunshop. I did later buy a 25/06.

If I had to choose today, I'd flip a coin to decide. For groundhogs, a 55gr pill from a 243 at 4100 fps does ghastly work, and you can easily take a deer with a 95 or 100gr at about 3000 fps. The 25/06 runs 87-120gr bullets between about 3400 and 3000 fps so can work the hogs and deer equally as well - the latter a bit better. Both are about perfectly balanced for their bore size. Tough choice to make.

Ammo is cheaper in .243. .243 ammo is more common. 243 is a short action. and .243 will take any game a 25-06 will. Ballistics are comprable.

With these factors what reason can people have to recommend a 25-06, besides "I have one and it works great" (which I'm sure it does)

I owned a 25 06 and just love the cartridge as a deer round. I currently own 2 243's but don't use them for deer. I have better suited rifles for 350 lb mule deer out to 350 yards and this is not out of the question in the Cariboo where I live. Your situation is far different though.

I don't for a minute believe that there is no difference between the 2. The 25 06 will take on bigger game with cleaner kills but for closer range medium sized deer, it is hardly far apart.

Short action, great BC's...sound advice.;)

Very true indeed, but I already have a 7mm-08. Pretty hard to find something the .260 will do that the 7mm-08 wont. If I'm going to go for the .260 it will be to replace the 7mm-08 not back it up.:D And my 7mm-08 just isnt ready to retire yet.

Now, would I spend a little more for a .257 Roberts??????? you bet.

257 wont do anything a 260 wont, except shoot the same bullet weights slower, probably with less accuracy. Most 257 Bob rifles have deeper throats than Paris Hilton.

get a 25-06

120grn work well on deer but don't expand quick enough on yotes :)

I've got some lighter stuff I'm playing around with (thanks secret santa) for yotes.

Brother has a 243 and I would never trade my 25-06 for it. The 25-06 is just a better caliber.

but our deer are bigger ang gophers smaller out here

I'm fairly sure this is the funniest post I've read since the last funniest post I'd read.
