25-06 vs .243

7-08 = Not legal in S.W. Ontario due to caliber restrictions...

I'd look at the .270WSM
then the .257 WBY

If $ for ammunition is an issue for high volume varm. shooting, then the .25-06is probably your better bet
When did they move Ottawa to S.W.O.? ;)

I like my 25-06. Don't have to think about wind or drop out to 300 yds. My gun doesn't like over 100 gr. bullets, but I have 2 loads I use that I can switch between and be sighted in within an inch.

My varmint load
*85 gt Nosler Ballistic tip
*58 gr H4831 SC
* 3450 fps

My deer load
*100 gr Barnes XLC XBT (blue moly)
*55.9 gr. reloader 22
*3400

To answer the question being asked , my answer is.....the 25-06 is flatter shooting, harder hitting at all ranges than the .243:p
I think there is possibly more .243's sold around here than 25-06:wave:

both are small bore potatoes.....270 is where it's at!

If bigger is better, why not shoot a 300mag? :)

I'd be looking at hunting coyotes to white tail with it. Ontario kind of shots (under 150 yards... but want capability further..)
I doubt very much you would see any practical difference in the 25/06 and the 270 for shooting WT or coyotes. Larger game .... yes, but not deer and dogs.

I have both a 270 and 257Roberts. I think the 270 is going to be sold, preferring the 257 as it is perfect for deer with 100grainers at 3100fps.

For moderate range deer hunting, the 243 will work just fine. There's a few real good factory ammo options for deer such as 85 grain Federal TSX, 100 gr Federal Nosler Partitions, Winchester Supreme 95 grain Xp3. Alot of good options for varmint loads too, ranging from 55 grain to 85 (I count eleven from Federal, Remington, Winchester, & Hornady). There is no doubt the 25-06 is a superior deer and larger game cartridge, but inside 150 yards, it just doesnt take THAT much power to kill a deer, assuming the bullet can be placed in the right spot. Much less factory ammo varmint weight options for 25-06, I count three! (Winchester 85 gr BST, 90 gr PEP, & Federal 85 gr NBT). 243 Wins hands down

Ive owned two 243s, and have yet to own a 25-06. I did however own its short action ballistic twin, the 25-284, which I enjoyed. I sold it because it simply did not do anything my 260 Remington doesnt, except burn 10 grains more powder. But since we're talking factory ammo here, there aint much point in going further :D

243

I;ve shot more than enough coyotes with the 25-06 to tell you its a damn good round to use. Try not to shoot them vmax bullets at the dogs though, unless your not keeping pelts. Just a bad idea that i had to learn the hard way. Got to learn how to sew pelt though. The round is also a excellent deer round. I know more than one hunter that uses the 06 and all are happy with the performance.
