Have any of you gunnutz had any experience with heavier than 120 grain bullets in the 25-06?
Prferrably a Vld long rangezstyle?
I would like to see what this quarter bore caliber could really perform like.
Any ideas?

Hi Cyanyde.
I understand all the twist and stability stuff, I am just trying to see if anyone has made and tried this caliber with heavier bullets than 120gr.
If they have, what twist, bullet(is it available) etc.
I think the 25-06 could do allot better if these Bullets were available.
Any ideas?

I shoot a 6.5-06, which is about as close to .25-'06 as it gets.
And it shoots 140 grain-class VLD's just fine. Lapua, Berger, Hornady and Sierra work.
It's an 1-in8 barrel to stabilize those nails.

I agree that the .25-'06 could be a better all-round cartridge if there were heavier, more slippery bullets available for it.
As for the bullets being available? Well, here's the chance for you to go into business!
Go to \http://www.corbins.com/ and have a look around.

I do not believe that anyone is making a match VLD heavier than 115gn.

I made up a wildcat 25 AI based on a .243 case a while back, this was a heavy bbl f-class rifle. I used Berger 115gn VLD bullets (heaviest VLD's I could find) and RL19 out of a 30 inch bbl. 3200 fps was easy, but it shot best at 3150. I still have the bbl and this winter I plan to try the Matrix Ballistic 125gn FB bullets to see how they shoot.

I have a Sako 25-06 that my son will use for hunting and so far the Matrix ballistic 125gn RBT shoot best, second is the Hornady 117gn SST's.

There used to be a bullet maker in Alberta, called himself something like "Wild Cat Bullets" or Wild Rose" or some-such.
I don't know about his .257" offerings; but I know he had a 107 grain .224" bullet, so I'll bet he had a heavy 25 too.

I believe you are talking about Alberta Wildcat Bullets, I bought from him as well but I believe he has been out of business for some time now

Your best bet is Berger's 25 cal 115 Grain Match Hunting VLD.
Matrix Ballistics sells a 25 125 Grain Rebated Boat tail bullet (excellent Canadian product).
There are very few 25 caliber bullets because it's "forgotten".

Maybe the 25 cal will become popular in the next few years and things will change.

25 caliber suffers from "Metric Squeeze Syndrome"!

Maybe the 25 cal will become popular in the next few years and things will change.

All 25 caliber cartridges suffers MSS (Metric Squeeze Syndrome), the first syndrome is the appearance of new metric caliber cartridges which outperform existing cartridges because of superior case and bullet design.
The victim the goes into a slow steady decline, only a few extremely strong 30-06 base cartridges manage to survive this terrible disease (25-06, 270).

More seriously, you would need a 25-08 which outperforms both 243 Win and 260 Rem. It's possible but very difficult since you're squeezed between 6mm-08 and 6.5mm-08 both of which are excellent cartridges with excellent hunting and match bullets.

As a note, I'm a huge 27 caliber fan and have very happy about the success of recently introduced 6.8 SPC and 270 WSM, proof that there's nothing wrong with older, non-metric calibers.

257 long range

I shoot 128's and 135's in a 25 WSSM with a 1 X 8" twist Pac-Nor barrel on a 700 Rem set up for 17 lb. 1000 yd benchrest. Sighted 25 to 30 inches high at 100 yds will get these bullets to 1000 yd zero. Quite similar to 6.5-284 with 130's and 140's.

Next 25 cal project will be a 25-06 AI in 1 X 8" barrel. The first chamber will be cut short to 250 Savage AI length. If it drives these bullets to 2850 fps its a keeper, if not run it to 308 length and if that fails take it to 257 Roberts AI. The standard 25-06 is a demanding cartridge to reload as the brass flows forward, the Ackley version stops the BF and cases last much longer.

I have a 1-10 .257 Roberts AI barrel on the way but that twist is probably only good to 100gr bullets.

I have a Cooper M22 Varmint in 25-06AI with a 10" twist. Pushes the 120gr SGK's to 3200fps easily, shoots great, sub moa. It will drive them faster but this load shoots so well I am happy with 3200.
The other bullet I load is the 85gr NBT, 3600fps hammers coyotes nicely.

You can go up to 115-120gr bullets with a 10" twist, but don't expect to stabilize 115-120gr TSX-style bullets. I'm getting sub-MOA with the 115gr VLD in a 10 twist barrel right now...

I shoot 125gr flat base bullets through a 10" twist barrel with great results....MOA or better @ 100yds 5 shot groups. Mind you I have only shot out to 300yds. I am using this for hunting not long range target. Should be a good penetrator with a BC(static) of .455 and travelling @ 2950ft/s. If I was to try long range target I would definately go with the 125gr RBT with its higher BC and better long range stability.

Are you shooting the Matrix 125 ?

Ive got FB's and RBT's to test...not quite ready yet but anxious. Ive got 9" twist broughton. Ive only formed some brass with 87gr. bullets and it shoots those fairly well.
