25-06

As amazingly flat shooting that the 257 Weatherby is ... its recoil is right up there with a 270 Winchester .... so might as well get a 270 Winchester? Reloading components are cheap and available everywhere

Guys wouldn't need long range stuff if they knew how to hunt.

Nonsense. Define "long range". I shot an Alberta buck last year offhand at a measured 325 yards....no cover of any kind between me and the deer, just a flat stubble field. It didn't seem all that far away given the locale. Scope was just a 4x. (I know that to some, 300 yards is not yet "long range"). I also know about close range shooting. I sucessfully hunted Blacktails for a decade on the west coast where my shots were measured in feet rather than yards. The best Blacktail buck I got was with open sights at less than 25 yards (I did have a low power scope but took it off because of the pouring rain.) But these days I would rather use a longer range rifle that in a pinch can be adapted for short range...rather than a short range rig that cannot be used for longer ranges.

I am all crippled up from 6 crashes over my lifetime. Just average size yet i shoot 375rum, 340 wea, and five other magnums and african calibers. How is 270, or 257 bee considered high recoil?

That being said, most of those are not plinking calibers. I have had the 375 rum for about 16 years, total round count is under 150. Projectile cost, as any of those are reloader or bank loans to shoot. While the 2506 and any quarterbore are pleasant, 2506 ammo is not Canadian tire common. Furthermore, projectile development has not been driven by target shooting or a flavour of the year craze like 6.5 creedmore is to .264. I would doubt any .257 bore is in the top 40 selling reloading dies.

So quickly:

Pros

Low recoil for small framed/sensitive shooters
Chambered in many rifle types and brands.
Suitable for larger game than .243
Brass easily formed from 06 family

Cons

Largest projectile 120gr
Uncommon availability as ammo, in retail.

i would say ... own the whole family! 30-06, 270, 25-06 ! Why not? Weatherby Vanguards are chambered in all three ... for about 2000 on sale you could have a triple play!

They're Vanguards.

You should be buying them in 300, 270, and 257 WBY.

I buy my 25-06 ammo at Canadian Tire in Oromocto, New Brunswick. (I finally quit reloading after 40 years of making everything from .38 to 45-70. I just don't have the time for it anymore.) I have yet to have a problem finding 25-06 in "common" stores.

That Canadian Tire in Oromocto would not be the norm for selection in other stores. I doubt you could buy 25-06 in Saint John.

Three local CT stores in my general local all have a regular supply of 25-06 ammo. I think it is popular enough that is generally not that hard to find anymore. I don't own one right now, but I made my personal longest kill shot on a coyote with a Rem 700 SPS stainless in 25-06, 396 yards by laser and hit him in the neck, after a quick back flip and the usual death circle he dropped less than ten feet from the impact sight.

Maybe...I don't know about St. John....I went on-line to find which Can Tire stores in my area had 25-06...the south Fredericton store (a few blocks from me) didn't have it, but the north Fredericton store did have some. However, I would rather buy from Oromocto and its only a few minutes drive. (My Triumph's battery once died at a gas station in Oromocto and I pushed it over to the Can Tire store. They were very helpful and got it fired up again. For free. So I owe them the business.)

This thread has peeked my interest in the 25-06. A check of my local CT Pro Shop today showed a half decent selection of factory ammo. Considering a 25-06 for a designated deer rifle, a little more juice than a 243, sufficient energy out to 400 yds or so and less recoil than a .27o and a fair bit flatter than a 6.5 CM.

I have a 25-06 again, didn't like the first one. Sold it. 12 years later have another and my opinion is still the same, can't warm up to it. Love the 30-06 though. Will either sell this current one or rebarrel to a 6.5.
