Does anyone know of a .25 cal wildcat based off of the .308 win case? Either traditional shape or AI variety? I think that would make a great cartridge for a ultra light mountain rifle. Any thoughts?

6.5-08 is fairly easy to do - a .264 instead of a .257 and a great cartridge, much better than a .243 for bullet weights and far superior SD. Very cool cartridge. Never seen anything in the .25 version but the "Page Super Pooper" or whatever Warren Page called it is a natural for a shot out .243 and can launch a 117 gr bullet to easily 3000 fps. There's another version, a rare one, the .257 Durham Jet that's made by necking up the .243 and utilizes the classic Ackley shoulder angle of 40 degrees, then the neck is shortened .300. This one is suppose to be capable of pushing a 117 gr bullet to around 3150. If I ever burn out my .243 it's gonna become a .25 Super Pooper.

I already have a Kimber 84m montana 7mm/08. It is a dream to carry at 6lbs scoped, but it did get me thinking about a smaller caliber in basically the same package, for no particular reason than to have something different. I was basically just curious if there was a "standard" reamer, and dies to purchase if neccessary (for a different rifle, not the kimber). I was thinking of a cartridge to use heavy for caliber bullets (130+ gr?) at moderate velocity (2700 - 2800 if possible) in a true short action (not a 257 roberts AI). If this does come about it will be a year or two yet. Just thinking with my fingers.

It sounds like your willing to get a rifle built and if you want a .25 consider the 250 savage improved. Its fire forming factory brass so no case forming procedure other than trigger pulling and dies are available special order. The ballistics (@3100-3200fps with 100gr) are almost 257roberts improved maybe 100fps less but less recoil (extremely important in light rifles) and easier to fit in a short action Rem mod7 or 700. The 250 savage AI has an excellent rep for accuracy without being overbore and giving good velocity, its efficient. It does out perform the .260 and 7-08 in the lazerbeam department. 100gr speer hotcors grouped the best 5/8" in my 257Roberts as did 115TSX and either will work on sheep. If you don't want to spend all the $ a .260Rem or 7-08 are hard to beat. Keep in mind its nice to have the ability for a 175TSX in the chamber in grizz country.

The 25 you"re looking for is called the 25 Souper, been around for a long time. Good cartridge, but a wildcat, so you have to roll your own. No real ballistic advantage over the 260 or 7-08 (the king of the 308 based cartridges in my opinion), but sometimes different is a good enough reason. - dan
