My views on the Short Mags.
I don't remember when but the first thing I ever said about short mags was I didn't like 'em. Yep, I admit it.
But it's not because they are new. The people that think that do not understand my position/reasons at all.
Eg: I have a .17HMR, I have a .416 Remington, which is a relative baby introduced in 1988.
The short mags do not appeal to me cuz the older I get the more I agree with Elmer Keith. The bread and butter of the short mags are sending lighter bullets at higher velocity. I am interested in cartridges that drive heavy bullets at moderate speed, so that's the main point.
I am not a hyper velocity kinda guy.
The Remington Short Action Ulta-Mags failed badly; the Winchester short mags do have merit and I have said that. Super short mags? I dunno, varmint stuff. I don't hunt varmints. Yeah, I know I'm going to hear that the .25WSSM is a great deer caliber.
Late 2005 or early 2006, I had a Winchester Model 70 in .300WSM in my hands and I goddamn near bought it (at Wholesale Sports, Edm). The only reason I passed on the gun was the $1,200 price tag, not the cartridge. If I had known then that the model 70 was gonna get scrapped I would have bought it in a heart beat. But most people here wouldn't know that story cuz I don't waste my breath name dropping to keep people happy.

Get hold of some of the old 125 gr Barnes, and see how it works with them. That's a pretty heavy bullet for a 25. - dan

And besides, everyone who knows nothing knows the .280 blows the doors off the .270, and well, the .243 is really no match for the 6mm Rem, just like the 25WSSM is far superior to the 25-06

Okay, I've had a 25 WSSM for about a year now. I have fired about 350 rounds through it with no problems. It is a browning A bolt. Never once has it jammed. Groups are good at 100yds, comparable with any out of the box rifle. Never shot a deer with it as I live in shot gun country however it has managed to reach out and touch a number of ground hogs and coyotes( Ill post pics when I find them). The 85gr bullets are ideal for both as anything over 100gr barely gets to expanding unless you have a larger animal to shoot. The biggest ##### about all the WSSM family is the retarded cost of ammo. After four boxes I immediatley ordered dies and brass. The cartridge is similar in appearence to many wildcat benchrest loads, I am not a expert but there is probably something to be said for that. If you are willing to load your own ammo it is a worthwhile gun. I have since sold my 222 and my 223 as they dont perform as well and I have no need for them anymore. Theres my two cents.
