We got my rifle back from the gunsmith and looks like the caliber is 25 x 6.5 rem mag or reverse. Anyone knows anything about this or I should just get a 6.5 rem mag rebarrelled job.

The gun was a mauser 98, parkerized by Parker hale, then rebarrelled by the dad of a friend who never finished the job, too busy. We found out the caliber tonight so any inputs will help.

Sounds horrid... 35 years ago it would have been something although still an expensive project.

More details are required to make intelligent responses. Are all the action alterations completed? Does it feed correctly? Are two big ones. Quality pictures of the action too...

Since the 6.5 Rem case has about the same capacity as the 30-06 case so you have a 25 cal wildcat that will have ballistics very close to the 25-06 cartridge. This may be desireable if you were using a short action but since the M-98 action is a std length action there will be nothing gained there. Many feel a short fat case subtends better accuracy but that is not the only thing that delivers fine accuracy .

It will better std 25-06 velocities slightly. Little more case capacity and you can seat the bullets further out in the 98 action. When the 6.5 and 350 were wildcated up and down. I had a 7mm on the case at one time. The short fat case theory seems to have some truth in it, and it will hold true for the 6.5/350 case as much as for the wsm/saum cases. I would neck size some cases, load up some good 25 cal bullets and see what it does. You may just have a dandy of a deer rifle. - dan
