250-300 yard caliber / rifle / optics

I have found that for offhand shooting a 3x9x scope works well for most people, especially past 100 meters.
Any higher magnification tends to increase the tendency to tighten up and hold right on center, which is detrimental for the average person to shoot accurately.
Learning ro call your shots with proper followthrough is paramount to learning good offhand accuracy.
For bench shooting, it is much easier to shoot woth a higher magnification than when shooting offhand, but again, without properly learning proper bench techniques, it is pretty difficult as well.

Thank you for the details. I ended up getting a Primary Arms 3-18x50. Probably (definitely) overkill, but the price was good. I'll keep your comments in mind when training with it.

good on getting the Howa Mini
we would also like to see then with iron sight option or even after-sale kit

Yeah, there aren't too many iron sighted 223's out there. Think CZ makes one or made one (CZ 527 Carbine?), the Ruger Mini 14 (OIC'd), Akdas Alcor, Savage and a Sako ... at least that what I've found when passively searching / killing time.
