Forewarning, I have been covid laid off so have lots of time.

I love old guns, especially when they have stories.

For years my late father searched for a 250-3000 that matched his first gun as a kid. The search was sorta loose until he got a fatal prognosis. We then started scouring the land trying to find the exact gun, it had to have the factory peep, to no avail. We were hoping to hunt one last time with this cherished rifle. This never happened.

Fast forward 10 years (dad passed 5yrs ago). I am sitting talking with my father in law about guns as my daughters are getting into shooting and hunting. I mention my fathers search for ‘his’ 250-3000 of past. He says “####, hang on”. Goes to the basement to bring the one pictured up. It’s really unfortunate as I didn’t let him know what we were looking for when my dad was alive. So be it. He handed it to me and said it’s yours with the rest of them. History of rifle was his dad bought it new year unknown. Serial number dates it to 1915.

It came with boxes of ammunition (I won’t shoot) and date of manufacture I don’t know. One box has a $3.75 hand written price and another $5.15.

It shoots 3-4” groups at a 100 for me. Looking forward to deer season this year as I have figured my sighting problem out (high left)

Let’s see yours and stories if you have.

I was curious too as to how your FIL had the firearm and you didn’t know that. So close.

I don’t know what his bank account balance is either. We aren’t really close and don’t get a chance to talk much alone. When I visit it’s with his grandkids and his attention goes there. He is over 80 now and hasn’t hunted in at least a decade either, not since I have known him anyways.

Mine is the new and improved bolt action from Savage in a model 14 American, super sweet rifle that P&D kindly ordered for me at least 10 years ago.
Handles Sierra 90gr HP bullets with fabulous accuracy and those bullets very destructive on lung tissue.
Loaded with a medium charge of Win 760 ball powder 39.5 grains very mild rifle to shoot

I would shoot that old factory ammo.....FS

Sounds like a sweet rifle. I am considering building one.

Thanks.

Got me one of those 1914/15 dated 250/3000 1899 Savages. It's a take-down, not a collector, but a clean and sweet piece nonetheless. The purists will probably throw up just a little in their mouths, but I had it d&t'd, and mounted a scope on it. I'm well into my 70s now and open irons are pretty much a waste of time. With a mild load of H4895, and 90 grain Sierra GameKings, I was able to get groups down to 1". Couldn't do it with any of the 100 grain bullets ... just too long for the 1:14 twist I guess.

Mine is a Ruger 77 made in 1976 (bought it that year) and have used it for excess of 100 deer and unknown # of coyotes. Shoots 100 g and 87 g to same spot at 100 yds. Great calibre for all round but ammo is getting harder to find. Reloads work good though.

I once had a Kurz-length commercial Mauser 98 in .250. Shot my best buck with it. Stupidly traded it off 20 years ago and I'm still kicking myself when I think about it.

Yes, at the bench with 100’s i can consistently shoot 3.5” groups. Fair enough for me and no scope

Thanks

Try the 100gr Winchester Silvertips - they shot well in my 1921 dated 1899.

You can also form brass quite simply from readily available 22-250 brass.
