250 savage

Not dead... just will never command any significant share of the market again... it was a great cartridge in its time and will still kill medium game these days and with panache... using some of the modern bullets and powders, it should be even more effective... I still have a 99 in the quarter bore and a 77 in the .22 version.

Is it dead?
Personally I think it's a great lil round but I see only a few companies list it and I think they're old listings at that

It's still a great round. As far as I am concerned it is a better choice for hunting than a 243 for recoil sensitive shooters. Brass is still plentiful (and if you can't find any it is a simple matter to neck up .22-250 cases) and there is a wide selection of bullets available. Ruger still chambers rifles for it and most semi-custom makers like Cooper will build one for you if you wish.

I really like the .250 savage, but the .243 delivered it a crippling blow and it still hasn't recovered. I also really enjoy its offspring the .22-250. Unfortunately I bought a model 7 .243 for a great deal, thinking I might rebarrel it to something else .250 savage being on the short list. My mistake was shooting it as is, I can't bring myself to alter it now.
I still want a .250 and that model 7 still whispers to me about different calibers and chambers. It may happen yet.

The .250 has excellent performance on deer sized game and even better varmint results. Brass is easy enough to form if you can't find it and there are enough bullet options to keep things interesting enough to me as a handloader.

I purchased a Savage Model 16 Weather Warrior in 250 cal. last year. I have no problem finding new brass for it. It is a shooter. Firearms companies are missing out by not chambering this caliber in a scaled down firearm for small frame shooters.

The .250 is a great cartridge, but yeah, it's become very uncommon and underappreciated. Which is the word I would use instead of what Bearhunter338 said. Neither of these cartridges is UNDERRATED; anyone who knows anything about firearms rates them very highly.

Winchester stopped production of their gold-standard 100-grain Silvertiop load, which really hurt .250 shooters. The only thing left really is the Remington 1090-grain Core-Lokt load.
It is an excellent cartridge to handload; I have two scoped 99's that have shot half-MOA groups with Reloder 15 and flat-base 100-grain bullets, and a Model 16 bolt rifle that's almost as accurate. In my experience with a half-dozen rifles in each chambering, it is far less "fussy" to load for than the .257 Roberts.

I had my Model 16 to the range today. Very little wind, temp at -27C. Best 100-yard groups with VitaVourhi N106 powder and two bullets: the Rem Core-Lokt Ultra Bonded 115-grain, and the Hornady 117-grain SST, were about 7/8 inches for 3 shots. That's venison on the table any day.

I have an original 1920s savage model 20 bolt action 2503000 walnut stock super lite rifle. shots excellent but the the bolt handle turns almost straight up threw a split rear receiver ring. original lyman peepsit. back then they called it a ladys gun. about 5lbs.

I managed to get my hands on a mod 77 RSI in the little 25, but haven't done too much with it...........it does seem to be particularly finicky, haven't found a suitable load for it yet.

It's the stainless one in the middle.

Having one built on (off?? Sorry Rembo ;)) a lh SA Remington as we speak. David Henry is putting his magic touch into the rifle.

Can't wait to work up some loads for deer and predators.

Douglas, that stainless gun between the two blues must drive an OCD dude, such as yourself, crazy... I understand and would like to help... I suggest that I give you the monetary resources to get rid of the offender and enable its blued replacement...

My 700 classic thrives on Fed mag primer /Win case/Win 760 and Sierra 100gr SP.I resize 22-250 brass with Hornady dies as they have a more tapered expander button than RCBS........no brass loss yet..........Harold

You sir are correct, however I have the financial resources to rectify the situation, have never come across a blued one with which to rectify it with. However you must admit they are kinda cool with the 3 incarnations.........the old 308 in the back with red pad, tang safety and blued bolt, the Mk II in the front with the stainless bolt, gray/black pad and new safety and the Mk II stainless in the middle..............
