250gr 338win SGK for moose?

I've got a load that I use for deer hunting with my Ruger M77 338win. It uses the 250gr Sierra Game King bullet with a MV of just over 2700fps. It works great on deer in that it does very little meat damage even at close range.

I haven't hunted moose in years but intend to for the 2012 season. I used to use black talon fail safe 230gr bullets in the 338win for moose and they worked very well but I hate the molly coating on them and the sierra bullets are much cheaper and more accurate in my rifle.

My hunting can result in shots from less than 50m to up wards of 500m so the bullet needs to work at close and long range and at less than ideal angles. The last bull I shot was at around 250m quartering away into the tree line, the bullet (fail safe) entered his right hip and exited his left chest dropping him on the spot.

I think the 250gr SGK should be a good bullet for moose but I'd like to hear from guys that have used it on heavy game. How did it work? Could I make the above shot with the 250gr SGK?

i used seirra game kings in my 340 weatherby and shot a bull straight on in the chest ,, the bullet passed through out threw one hind ham left a hole about like a 1/2 inch drill , right through without any sign of upset,, i switched to 250 grand slams , rite then and they work perfect for the last 20 years ,, wade

I get a kick out of guys talking about how a bullet failed after skinning their game. Those Sierras will be fine for moose, provided you hit 'em right.

That is more or less the velocity that they were designed for. That being said, they stand a good chance of separating from their jacket on close shots, but, you can talk about the poor bullet performance as you are eating your moose steaks.

I used that bulleton moose in the 338WM and the Lapua with excellent results

I used the 200 Sierra Game king with great results on moose in the 30-06, very accurate from the bench, about 1/2 inch at 200 yards, several 1 shot kills the longest being about 160 yards. If your gun shoots it well stick with it...

I use hornady in 338, 250 interlocks, spire point and round nose and have good reults with them and they are quite cheap compared to the primum bullets.

A250 gr anything will do on a moose.

I'd use them without hesitation. IIRC Craig Boddington used them in Africa some years ago and they worked fine.

I've used the 250SGK on moose, worked well, and was quite accurate. Do your part, and it won't fail.
