I've got a good load for the 250gr Gameking bullets that holds just under 1MOA and is clocking just over 2700fps. I've shot a few deer with it, just passes through them like the bullet doesn't open up at all. The deer die but the usually run off a 100 to 200m before they fall over. I'm wondering if this bullet/load will be good for moose? In the past all of the moose I've taken where with the old 225gr (or was it 230gr?) Winchester Black talon bullets but they are not longer sold and they where not as accurate as the 250gr gameking load that I have.

Only going from what I've read on this and other sites, I stayed away from GK's for hunting when I had a .338 They would shoot great in the Ruger's I had. The many pictures of blood shot meat made me choose other pills!!!

Do a search on the site, you should have lots to read!!

I have had good sucess with the 250grn gameking in a 338 on moose I only ever recovered 1 bullet. I tried the 200grn in my 300wby but the bullet could not handle the speed and fragmented like a varmit bullet.

i never had good luck with the game kings in my .340 wea. they never seemed to open up, left a hole like a 1/2 inch drill went comepletely through the animal, i switched to 250 gr grand slams ,then one shot the moose went down in its tracks i have a few i recovered if you send me you email address i will send pics, i dont know any other way to show you,,, wade

I've used 250 grain Gamekings in my .338 win mag for about 20 years and never had a problem with them. They're an excellent all around bullet and the've got great ballistics for long range. Actually, it was my success with those 250 grain gamekings in .338 that got me buying them in other calibers as well. I push them along at about 2750 fps with handloads and they've been performing great. Still over 2000 ft/lbs at 500 yards, but not so fast as to get them to fragment. I don't think the 338 win mag can push them fast enough to fragment myself, so comparing gamekings in other calibers that push bullets along well in excess of 3000 fps isn't really a fair comparison. The 2750 I'm getting is as fast as you'll get from a .338 win mag. As far as recovered bullets - I've never recovered one from bears or moose.

Go with a premium bullet such as Barnes, Nosler Partition or Lapua Naturalis. Higher weight retention and reliable expansion with these expensive bullets make them a good investment.

I've loaded 250gr Partitions, 225gr Interlocks, and 225gr Interbonds for mine, but haven't used any on game yet. Would the GK be more like the interbond or the interlock, performance wise?

I have used and shot a few bears, never shot a moose with them, and it worked well out on my 338 wm!
They went through both animals and did not make a real big mess as i recall!
Shot a deer with that same combo and it went in and out or the boiler room leaving a quarter sized hole from one side to the other.

My son, who is now living in the B.C. interior, uses Sierra 250gr Game Kings in the .338wm reloads I've cranked out for him. I just took somemore up to him a week ago and was lucky enough to find two more boxes of those bullets at a shop in Quesnel. Two Deer and a Black Bear this year with the reloads, three 'bang flops'.
In my .308 Norma Mag, the 200gr Game Kings have proven to be the most accurate bullet in the reloads I've shot out of it. On game, three shots, three Moose. They've performed well for me.

John, what load are you using in your 308 Norma with the 200 gr?

Ted
-To start with, the rifle I have in .308 NM, is a Schultz & Larsen 65DL. In the latest Sierra manual I have, I see that's what they used for a test firearm. Great gun and definately a 'keeper'.
-Next, it appears they have dropped some of their loads a little. Using IMR 4350, the maximum suggested load is listed as 67.5grs for 2800f/sec.
-Also, to minimize freebore, my increased my C.O.A.L. to 3.355" which exceeds their suggested 3.250"
For your own safety I wouldn't suggest you, or anyone else for that matter, use my load without carefully working up to it.
It is as follows;
- Norma brass, trimmed 2.555"
- 200gr Sierra SBT
- 69grs of IMR 4350
- CCI 250 Primer
- C.O.A.L. 3.355"
I'm using an RCBS two die set. However, if I load for accuracy testing, I use an RCBS neck sizing die rather than the full length resizer and it does 'seem' to make a little difference. If you're interested, PM me your e-mail address and I'll send you a scan of a test target. The basics are;
- 100yds
- 5 shot group of 1.061"
- Discounting one as a 'flyer', a 4 shot group of 0.722":D
