Yes that's the Disconnector, if you pull your trigger while supporting the hammer and keep the trigger held down while pushing the hammer back this grabs it's to stop it from firing again.
What derek2007 stated is exactly correct - this is the same design/configuration as the tried and true (Stoner) AR uses. In your first picture the hammer and sear are in engagement.
