A friend has asked me to find him some brass and reloading info for this caliber, so far all i have found is rather vauge.

anybody have personal experiance with this caliber?

hints/tip's/tricks/recipes?

ya theres lots of "i think you can" or "i have heard you can form it from".... would like to know what actually works from someone who does it tho.

so far the most usefull info has been useing a 25-06 case as a starting point... 6.5mm 130gr bullets and a RCBS sizer for 256 newt... then again i also heard online once that there were WMD's in Iraq, artificial sweeteners were safe and Anna Nicole married for love (lol).
 
My advice would be to rechamber the gun! Good luck finding brass or reforming should only be a 6>12 step process. I came across a beautiful 30Newton rifle and was advised to turn it into a 300win mag rather than waste time and money on reforming and reloading. I passed on the rifle for this reason. There MAY be a handful of people out there who reload for any Newton caliber. Good luck with your search.

Sorry, I just tried to give you a place to search.
My 256 is in the middle of restoration so no load info till next Spring, however my plan is to start with 6.5-06 loads as they are similar.
Best of luck in finding someone with hands-on experience to offer.
 
Yup, friend Arctic is right.

The .256 is the ONLY Newton cartridge which can be made from existing brass. ALL the others require a special draw.

FL size .30-`06 brass and you`re right there. BARNES (COTW6) gives the case length as 2.44 inches but my factory round disagrees with this.

Anyone offer further on the length of his beast?

I would use 25-06 brass to eliminate the need to turn the necks as they will be thick. I guess it depends on the chamber. 256 newt is just a bit shorter than 6.5-06 and Im only using 25-06 now to reload 6.5-06....just a lot less work.
 
The "Handloader's Manual of Cartridge Conversions" says to make the .256 Newton from .270 Win brass. "Anneal case. Trim to 2.5", F/L size in Newton die. Trim to length. Chamfer & clean".

The load given is 57 grs 4831 with a 140 gr bullet for 2890 fps.

According to my manuals that it over a max load for 6.5-06 so I would be careful to use it in a newton. Im pushing 130's in a 6.5-06 with 57.5gr. of RL-25 and that is max (red line according to quickload)....H4831 is somewhat faster.

I dont' know why they suggest using .270 brass since it requires so much more trimming than 30-06 or 25-06.....One thing for sure...its plentyfull :)
 
that was my thread about the 256 linked above. give it a read. All the loads I use are in there.

I find that 270 brass works the best for me.
