257 cal?

"Is it a good round? I don't know what make it could be yet Its a Browning gun "
I assume you have a rifle marked cal 257 and its a Browning rifle. If there is no other information on the rifle you need to do a chamber cast to find out what it is ,as mentioned above there are several 25 bore cartridges out there from 25-20 to 257 Weatherby. If its not clearly marked the barrel is probably not original as all modern manufacturers stamp there barrels clearly as to the round it uses.

RayHill, something fishy here. Do you have a PAL? If you took the course or challenged the test, you would know how to find out this stuff.
I haven't seen a factory, Browning yet, that didn't have the complete cartridge designation on the barrel.
Why don't you ask the store or person you bought it from? That would be the easiest and surest way to find out.

"...What is it comparable to?..." Any of the middle cartridges that can be used for deer and varmints with a change of bullet. Mind you, it's not absolutely neccessary to change the bullet. Just don't use a varmint bullet for deer sized game.
"...Its a Browning gun..." Which one? Browning has dropped the chambering, but they did make their BLR and A-Bolt in .257 Roberts.
Remington loads a 117 grain SP. Runs around $35 per 20.
