I have a 257 Roberts barrel made by Remington that I obtained years ago but have never put it on a rifle. Question is do I put it on a Remington short action or long action? My guess is a short action but I'm not sure. A long action may work but feeding from the magazine may be an issue.
I look forward to your replies.
Also do you like this calibre? It's an old one but favoured by some.

I have a .257 Roberts AI barrel on the way for a Savage and it will be going on a long action.

My custom M700 257 Roberts is a long action. Here's why ........

vs the same in a short action.

My .257 Roberts is a Winchester Model 70 with a long action and blocked magazine, making it effectively a short action. Nothing wrong with loading the cartridge as a 'short' cartridge. Certainly has not affected loading, accuracy, velocity and effectiveness. The clincher might be the throat of the barrel; does it allow for 'long' seating, or short. If it is set up for short, then you will have to deal with reaming out the throat.

Deer caliber

257 ROBERTS, it's a nice caliber, however the 250 savage is very close and would be used in a short action. In a deer caliber I would look at the 243 Win and the 6.5X55, they are also great calibers, and more readily available ammo.If you're not a reloader the 257 Roberts is out. The 25 calibers are OK up to deer size, but not a good choice for larger game.

Another option for that bbl would be to cut off the shank and rechamber for 250AI on a SA, but as Dan said the 257R would be the easiest route.

Either action will work fine, and give you the same results. It doesn't look as pretty if you seat to 2.8", but there is still enough case capacity to load to the potential of the cartridge.

As you have the barrel, check how it is throated and see what COL you need to reach the lands, then go from there is a thought.

Rick is correct in his assertion that a COL of 2.8" will work in a short action.

So to be fair, here is a pic of a 100gr Hornady SP at that length. Longer bullets will give different results, but the 100gr Hornady is perfect for deer in this chambering.

Paul, for me it comes to throating. Your barrel is obviously throated on the long side. You need the extra room in the mag box to get out to the lands so a short action won't work with your barrel. Your pics show it.

A shorter throat precludes the ability to seat longer even if you want to. FWIW it also allows you to seat a 75 V-Max or similar play bullet out to touch so it's not really a bad thing.

My present Roberts is a limited production #1A (you can tell me whether that is a long or short action :) ). It is throated so that a typical cup & core 100 grainer needs to be seated to about 2.9" to touch so it is somewhere in the middle. And it will give the same velocities as a 3+" Roberts.

That said the long seated pointy bullets do look cool in a Bob case. But if you can do that with your throating don't be surprised if your accuracy is less than wonderful with your coyote bullet. ;)

I had Bevan do mine for a 3" OAL with a throat to match. Truth is that I went with the LA as that's all I had on hand at the time. If it had been a SA, I would have got a 250AI and been just as happy with that.

That #1A would be a very nice rifle indeed. Not sure if it's long or short, but would be a push feed for sure. ;)

Thanks every one for your replies. I have a Remington 30-06 (long action)and have decided to swap barrels. I have brass and dies so it doesn't make much sense to re-chamber to 250 or another calibre. It will be fun to see how it shoots.
Can the 257 Roberts be "hot rodded" above loading manual limits which is sometimes possible depending upon many variables.
Bill

I have a Ruger on a long action and a BLR short action. Both have about the same throat length when it comes to cartridge OAL. I would put it one a Long action and have throat cut to the length of bullets that you plan to use. A short throat up to 100gr. and a longer throat for 115-120gr.
Whatever you decide you will not regret having a.....
