257 Weatherby loading

I have gathered some componets to load for a new to me 257 wby.once fired brass from the rifle 20 cases,Hornaday 117 gr SST ,cci #250 mag primers,and Hodgdon H 1000,H 4831 .any thoughts or opinions will be accepted with thanks

I use Retumbo, 7828 with 115gr partitions with great speed and accuracy, the two powders you mentioned should be a good place to start. Get a good manual your off to the races.

Only thing I've noticed with Weatherby rounds is that they like to be loaded at max velocity.

The dang free-bore has always drove me crazy though.

I am thinking of starting at 70gr H1000 this is from the hodgdon site for a 117 gr BTSP. the SST is a flat base so there is a bit more barring surface.as for the free bore this rifle doesn't seem to have alot.

If you got the loading data from the Hodgdon site and that is the starting load get loading and go to the range.

Top listed load with 7828 has always been the most accurate out of all 3 of my 257 wbys with 100 to 115 gr bullets. Less than 3/4 " in each gun. They all love tsx

Well I had a go at the 117 sst with 70gr of h1000 with a cci #250 primer .was very pleased to see with out adjusting the scope they were hitting 2" high 1/2" right 1.25" 5 shot group at 100yds.latter that same day I was able to get to the range again. and decided to shoot at 200yds .with the cartridges I had remaining I fired at a target printed on an 8.5x11 sheet of paper and did not put a hole in the paper .could the ballistics be that good that I would be shooting plus 4" at 200 with a 2" high 100 yd zero. I couldn't beleive that the target was blank.

Playing around with a .257 will give you a whole new appreciation of what flatshooting really means. My two both like 67 grains of IMR4831 and 100 grain TSXs and Ballistictips. I actually worked the load for the first one, and saw no need to vary it for the second.

Tight groups.
3 deer bang flop, one cow moose. Animals don't like this load.

i ran 115 gr tsx with rl22 last year. i use R-P 7mm hulls and 215M primers.

+1 on the 7mm hulls, my vanguard shoots 1/2-3/4" all the time. Just plain nasty with 120 grn Sierra HPBT's. I've used the 117 grn Hornady to and it shoots well too, was actually just forming with the Hornady loads, but have shot a few coyotes, couple deer and lots of paper with them. Still yet to test the Noslers I bought to hunt with, no doubt they'll be a lot the same as other Noslers I've used.

I use the 7mm Rem Mag cases in my son's .257 and Weatherby and Norma in my own. It helps keep them sepparated.

Mine are 7mm rem mag cases as well. This round is a pleasure to shoot.

Ha its not the 257 they hate .It that cramped up ride in to town in the back of the truck .

Funny, I asked them and nobody said anything..........I should have put this one in the bang flop thread, only one of the six took a step after those little 100 grain Ballistic tips smacked home. That one went a few yards but was sagging the whole way.

dogleg, i might have to try some of those 100nosler bt in mine. iv been shooting the ttsx but those little noslers might be way cool.
