I got a line on a NIB Weatherby Vanguard sub MOA in matte synthetic with a test target that is around 1/2 - 3/4 of an inch. Price is listed at $750, but there may be some wiggle room there.

Anyone got any experience with the Vanguard and the cartridge. Was thinking long range deer/targets.

Considering that I bought a new one at a gun show taxes paid for about a $500 dollar bill ,You are getting screwed! The Rifle and cartridge are excellent.

Rich, the gun he is dealing on has a B&C glass stock, and come's with an accuracy guarentee! I think $750 is a great deal on a great firearm, in a great LR deer calibre.

The only thing I don't care for is the 24" barrel

RR, are you referring to a Standard Vanguard or the MOA version. 500 dollars is the new price of the standard Vanguard, not the MOA in tanned stock.

I had a standard with SS and wood stock in 257. It was an excellent rifle and I got get it to shoot about 3/4 MOA with 5 shots, once the load was dialed in. Its also excellent on deer, took 3 deer with it and they all dropped like a rock. You really have to handload for your Weatherby as the factory Ammo is quite expensive.

Right you are about the tan spider web stock, and it IS a sub MOA rifle. Stock almost has a "sticky" feel. And I DO handload, have several rifles that have never eaten a factory loaded round. :)

I was thinking if I could shave 10% off the list, it might be a good deal. What say ye?

The Vanguards are excellent rifles, my only complaint is the trigger. But the only manufactures I found with good triggers were Tikka/Sako and Kimber. A timney trigger is a great addition. For 750 I would get it.

I used to own a Weatherby Mk. V SS in .257 Wby. I really like that cartridge. I used it on deer and boar. I handloaded for it; 75gr Barnes X and 120gr Partitions. Both loads worked very well on game. The 75gr X launched at a chronographed 3975 fps. With virtually no recoil. You could watch game react to the shot through the scope.

I too would think a 26" barrel is better, but don't let that stop you.

I have one in SS with synthetic stock. Very nice rifle. This is my second Vanguard. First one was a blued, wood stock in .270Wby. Shot like a dream. Still haven't done any load testing on the .257 yet. Any recommendations on bullet/powder?

Checked Hodgdon's data and seems Retumbo and US869 are too slow. H1000 seems ok. RL25 is also too slow, but RL22 should work. That is what I used in the .270Wby along with IMR7828.

IMR 7828 was the most accurate for me. 120gr partitions, COL 3.170 and 65grs of powder worked extremely well on deer and very accurate.

I use 57.0gr of IMR 4350 on a 113gr Chinchaga bullet and the same load for 120gr Nosler out of a Sako L61R action 26 inch Douglas custom barrel.
One shot kills everytime out to 600 yards. And I have witnesses;)

That would be me:D

Anyone here ever heard anything about making brass for the 257 out of 7 RMag brass. A couple guys on another board suggested it. The numbers look a little different in the case head area.

Just looking for a second opinion (or fourth. )

My son and I both have 257 weatherby's and R-22 is the best powder we have found.I'ts no trick to get 3600+ with a 100 grain bullet, and his has only a 24" tube.mine is 27" and gets about 50 to 75fps more then his.I have owned 3 Vangaurds and all shot MOA out of the box.For brass 264 mag works real nice, neck is a little short but not a problem. For $750 I would grab it you won't be sorry.
