What do you guys think? This or a 25 06? Need a new deer rifle. I am partial to a .243 though. But thinking on a 25 Whats the best one. In your opinion. Thanks.

Dave.

I have the 257 and love it. The 257 hits a lot harder than the 25-06. However if you are not a handloader, then you should really go with the 25-06. The price of 257 ammo from Weatherby is very expensive. You can download a Weatherby closer to 25-06 specs, but you can't get a 25-06 anywhere near a 257 load max load. Also depends what rifle you want. If its a Vanguard or Mark V then you can get the 257 otherwise you will have to get the 25-06.

What is the average distance you usually shoot at?

The 257 WBY is a bona-fide 450 yard deer cartridge. The 25-06 is not far behind.

The .243 is in a slightly different class with less "reach" than one of the "long" 25s. For average shots under 200 yards though it may be a better choice as it will usually destroy less meat than a close shot with either the 257 WBY or 25-06.

If you are looking for a mid-range 25 calibre look around for a used rifle in 257 Roberts or 250 Savage.

257

I always wanted a 257 WBY but i'm left handed so tough to find these days but i bought a 25-06 Ruger MKII SS and i'm getting 3230fps with 60gr of Retumbo behind a 115 partition, not to bad in my opinion, i don't shoot over 400 yards so it is all i need.

......... the 25-06 is boring and a less performer.

Not a whole lot less! ;)

A ~150 fps difference in velocity in 2 loads, both over 3000 fps, is less than significant. The only thing the WBY cartridge does "better" is eat barrels faster and bark louder. :D LoL

As much as the average guy shoots he can have that 257 wby pass it down to his kids and still have lots of life in the barrel. And if you do burn out the barrel get a custom job and shoot some more.:D
I just think its something different, fast and a neat gun to add to the collection. Alot of guys have a 25-06, few have a 257 wby mag.

Cheers!!:beerchug:

at the range two weekends ago a young fellow was there with his Dad shooting the boy's new stainless MOA Vanguard....in 257 Weatherby.....they had some factory stuff and some handloads...he asked if he could run one across my chrony....I said OK...so I did the shooting:D

how about a 100 gr Barnes XLC at 3648fps.......I think it was Rel22 powder IIRC....now that's cooking from a 24" barrel,..he11 that's cooking from a 26" barrel.......it was a bit hot though...I suggested he back it off a grain or two....:)

I didn't bother to check his targets so I don't know what kind of accurracy he was getting....

I've been threatening to build or buy a 257 Wtby for years....one of these days....it's pretty tough to get excited about putting one together when the local shop has blue Vanguards for about $750.....

And that is why the average guy doesn't have the shooting skills to take advantage of the slightly flatter trajectory that the 257wby offers.

Well my uncle was just an average joe and had a 257 wby mag did very well with it shooting longer then normal distances in Mantitoba farm land and the rifle still has great accuracy an will be passed down to my cousin.
Then again im just an average guy and what do I know, we've just got so many experts on the board here.

Just looked up 115 Noslers in the manual...

25-06 3116fps
257 Wby 3433fps

I would call that significant over 300 fps. How many thousands of rounds are you putting thru to burn a barrel out? You can always download the Weatherby to 25-06 specs, so barrel life is irrelavent.

Then I guess there is no real difference from a 30-06 and a 300 Weatherby, they have about the equivalent 300fps spread using 180grs.

Rembo, you can get a blue synthetic stock 257 from wholesalesports for 499.00.

just looked in the Barnes manual 100 grain ### in 257 with Reloader 19 3480 fps,
25-06 same bullet, same powder 3302fps, so there differences aren't that great. I was always under the impression that Weatherby barrels would not withstand thousands or magnum rounds.
I think that a 25-06 at any speed is a more pleasant round to shoot at the range.F S

Not much sence argueing which is better. For big game hunting(deer) with heavy bullets obviously the WBYs the way to go. The 257 is one WBY I've never played with, but I have had a few 25-06s. They make absolutely wicked varmit guns. I used to use the 85 gr. Speers at 3600 fps. Talk about purple haze. Anyway if you want the WBY get it.

25-06 3116fps
257 Wby 3433fps

Taken from the Nosler Reloading Guide Number Four

Maximum velocities with 115gr partition

25-06 3197fps

257wby 3285fps

For a diference of 88fps

Taken from Sierra manual second edition using 120gr bullets

25-06 3000fps

257wby 3200fps

For a difference of 200fps.

Taken from Hornady handbook third edition using 120 gr bullets

25-06 3000fps

257wby 3200fps

For a difference of 200fps

In all three examples the 25-06 used a 24" barrel and the 257wby used a 26" barrel. The 257wby vanguard uses a 24" barrel which will reduce the difference between the two cartridges to around 150fps.

In most cases there will be 200-250 fps difference.a major difference, of course not but we are talking 25 caliber,so if it's a comparison of hitting power well that's alittle comical.
Who cares how much of a diffferece there is,if you want something not everyone has buy it.
After all, your a gunnut **practicle shouldn't matter!!
