.257 Weatherby - Poor groups

Check the mounts/rings/scope and then once they are determined 'ok' try shooting top shelf Weatherby ammo. Contact Weatherby to check on the recommended 'inch pounds' needed to tighten the underside screws. (trigger guard and forward of the mag) This has been something that Weatherby has strongly recommended in the past and probrobly still applies. These guns can be tempermental, but once everything is secure and tightened to 'weatherby specs' IF it doesn't shoot... you'll have more to stand on when returning to the company. Eliminate variables..

Yup I guess I was wrong. I figured a 4" change is +/-2" at 100 yards which would be too small of a change.
Happens to me all the time :D

I can see a single click adjustment movement on the grid.
I swear by this old rig.
I use it when I get a new scope to make sure the reticule isn't affected by the magnification ring or the AO.
I had a new lower end scope that the x ring moved the poa and a mid range that the AO did it...I check everything now...saves ammo

It is also very useful to check scope alignment ( at hunt camp) or changing scopes.
Record where the ridicule is on the grid and it's a minor operation to dial in a different scope or to check or return an existing scope to where it should be...
it does more than just line your scope up with the barrel ;)

I'm going to check everything again.

I do have a Bushnell boresighting kit. I'll give the scope smack a try. :D

Factory ammo is tough to find. Every vendor I've checked is sold out.

I see you're in Ontario... Check with Gobles's guns (in London & Tillsonburg) They have 257 ammo at around $45 per box.

Not sure how I could free float the barrel in this case.

I did try it without the bipod attached and there is far less movement of the reticle.

I can't believe there is that much flexibility in the barrel!
1. Free float bbl.
2. Ditch the bi-pod and try it off bags or a rest.

You must be sunray's kid or something.
Vanguards are Howa's and both are very well known for being accurate. Not quite an uber long range 6.5x55 elk slayer, but even when they are chambered for the cauterizing 7mm Rem Mag they shoot very well.
Please stop giving advice to people......

Why are you such an a%#^
are you not getting any
you see this same post come up all the time ...
and so you shoot a 338 and the world revolves around that ...
cow town is right

Well, problem solved!

Went to the range today to test fire without using a bipod. I shot off a front bag placed not far ahead of the receiver on the forearm.

Shot about 25 rounds at 100 yards. MUCH better groups....some 3 shot groups were touching. All shots inside about 1.5"

I can likely tighten these up with some work on the load and a higher magnification scope, but for hunting we're in business.

Bipod must be flexing the barrel or messing with the harmonics.

Thanks for all the suggestions guys.

Congrats! Happy that you went the range and got it shooting. I wouldn't give up on the bipod (I believe a Harris bipod) and just give it a very slight tightening. Good luck!!!

good to hear!
you might try stiffening the fore end of the stock if you want to use the bipod.

Guess again, rem338win is right.

The Howa made rifles have a reputation for being quite accurate, regardless of whether they were sold under the Weatherby, Smith&Wesson, Mossberg , or Howa brand name. I have found them to be more accurate than my Weatherby Mark V rifles, despite costing less than half as much. Perhaps that is why the Howa made Vanguard 2 rifle, comes with a moa accuracy guarantee.
