257 weatherby soot on necks?

Hi guys
Something i have noticed with my 257 reloads. Black soot on case necks. Never below the sholder. But on all cases even max loads.
Never seen it on factory loads. But current liad is 68gr of imr 4831 behind 100gr swift scrocco11
Talked to a buddy that shoots 270bee and he said its the same for him.
Any of you guys run into this?
 
Hodgdon lists 68g as max on their website but only 52,000 CUP of pressure.
Nosler also lists 68g as max with 87% load density. Seems to me there is room to move if you want to experiment.

Im going to crono latter today and see.
I will see what factory is going to. Maybe some more room for powder. I know the books are laywered up preety bad on weatherby cases.
Does norma put out a reloading book?
I know they load all the weatherby factory rounds
 
I have a 1985 speer manual around here somewhere, I'll try to find it and see what it says.
Might be a good Idea for you to grab some older manuals at a gun show some time.

I have seen it most clearly in my .22 LR rimfire ammo. Remington loads do it all the time. SK ammo come out nice and clean, even though the cases measure a little smaller on the SK. I believe the issue is the softness of the brass. SK (Lapua) do a better job of annealing the brass and giving you a round that forms to your chamber on firing than Remington, or Winchester.

I would guess you have the same problem with your reloads. Are you annealing your necks and shoulders? Are you getting temperatures up to a dull red in the dark? If not, your necks are work hardening every time you fire and reload them. See the other thread on neck cracks, and in particular the chart I posted near the end of the thread. If the neck is too strong it won't open up fast enough to seal the neck, and you get blow back.
 
I would be tempted to use H1000 over the IMR, using Nosler's load data, but I don't think that is your problem.
 
You need to try and find some RL 25 or 26 for your 257 Roy..........it is magic, I use it with 110 gn ABs and exceed 3500 fps with a 26" barrel. Don't worry about the black necks, that is normal and depends more on which powder one uses than anything else. Many of my cartridges will come out with black necks, needn't worry unless you are getting partial shoulder collapse from pressure leaks. This is a product of too low a working pressure for the brass neck thickness..........many reduced plinking loads will blacken the necks, in fact nearly all will, and sometimes you can't slide a bullet back in a fired case. However this is not on point as you are certainly not using reduced loads..........
 
You can crimp the bullet to avoid this. I crimp all reduced loads now to avoid the sooty necks and have found the accuracy to improve and there is a lot less deviation in velocity. In theory the pressure in the case builds up a bit more before the bullet is released and the neck seals to the chamber. However I do not crimp full power hunting loads.
 
Well i found the more powder i stuffed into her the better it shot
70.5gr is max for it any more and i get extractor marks.
No rl powders anywhere near me sadly.
Going to crono this load next range trip. See what that tells me.
I have 7828 as well at home could get rutumbo locally as well if needed.
If i could find norma mrp somewhere would like to try that as well
 
Soot on the case / neck

The classic result of not enough neck tension or low powder charge or lack of crimp or all of the above,
change one of these variables to eliminate your problem.

I load my 257 Weatherby with 115 gr Nosler BT with 69gr of IMR 7828. Getting 3400 fps.... Always have soot on the case. Factory weatherby ammo gives me soot too. This is where I get my brass from LOL. My gun is a stock Vanguard 2 Lazerguard. Shoots 100 gr TSX, 110 gr accubonds and 115 gr BT all under one inch with handloads. Interestingly, it shoots the Factory Weatherby 100gr SP bullets the best (always under MOA - 3 shoot groups). Love the Calibre!!! IMR 7828 will be your friend.
