I am seriously looking into getting 257wby for my next hunting rifle to fill a percived 'gap' in my collection.
I would like to hear from owners, their opinion on the round and the gun with which it is shot from. I am looking at just a basic WBY vangaurd but would like opinions as rifles aren't my speciality. (much more of a handgun guy)

I have had 2 vangaurds, 2 ulralight wbys. and a rem 700 lss, all in 257 wby. All very accurate. I love the vangaurds if weight is not an issue. I have shot several moose deer and caribou with the 25y wby. Excellent performance. Always used 100 gr barnes ttsx and tsx

Aside from that bit of cheeky advertising I like my .257 Wby.
It is a vanguard in the blk plastic stock and blued barrel/action.
Factory ammo is expensive and can be found with relative ease, but again pricey !
My vanguard likes factory ammo and from the 100 grn spire point bullets to the 117 grn round nose bullets they all group within the inch and half with the ammo they recommend albeit to the different points of impact for bullet weight.
The Vaguards are heavy and thus not the best for climbing above the Alpine, but feel free if your game.
I would like a Mrk V actioned .257, for no other reason than I want one.
Others will offer you the green flavored Kool -Aide, but I prefer the purple along with my Wby in .257

If you haven't handled the vanguard then I would suggest going to store and checking one out. I was really interested in getting a vanguard because it was the most readily available gun that was chambered in 257 wby. After handling one in the store I quickly changed my mind. The guns are heavy, and although the action does feel strong, it seemed poorly machined in my opinion. I also did not like the feel of the fore end, it felt very narrow for my average-large hands. I have no doubts about the accuracy of the rifles. For a hunting gun I am not one of these lunatics that believe only a .0003" group can kill a deer. For the price I think they are a great gun. But personally for me I didn't like the feel so I have opted to save a little more dough and buy something else. So just make sure you handle it and like it, as should be done with any gun.
 
I've got a couple .257s; one a Mark V that my son claimed when he was 11 and wont give back. The other is a LSS that I picked up after I lost the last glimmer of hope.

He just reached his 15th birthday awhile back, and is sitting at 23 big game animals, nearly all with the same rifle. I dont remember any getting shot more than once with the little gun.

We both use the same load, 68 grains of IMR 4831 under a 100 grain ballistic tip or occasionally a TSX.
 
I have killed deer ,pronghorn, elk,and mountain goat with the 257wby, and if I was to purchase a factory rifle in 257wby, it would likely be a Remington 700 CDL.
 
The large buck I shot this year has made my .257 Vanguard a permanent fixture in my gun collection. I think mine is due for a Ross Featherweight Thumbhole the next time they're the weekly special :D That bullet in my pic is .257 100gr tsx out of a doe.
 
I have owned two. The first was a Weatherby synthetic blued Vanguard that cut ragged holes at 100 yards over and over with factory Weatherby ammunition. The only game I had a chance to shoot with it was a coyote at 150-200 yards, and it seemed to drop the instant I squeezed the trigger. :) I didn't find that rifle heavy at all.

The other rifle I had was a Remington 700 Classic w/ a King barrel, and it shot extremely well with anything I fed it.
 
As I am a L/H shooter I had a 257 weatherby built on a M700 action, gaillard barrel and Mcmillan stock it shoots 110gr accubonds at 3500 fps and 115gr partitions at 3400 fps in to .5'' groups or better at a 100 yards.

I am on my second mark 5 257. This one is an ultralight. The 257 is my favorite caliber. I have taken many big game animals with it. This caliber kills well. I have used soft bullets like 117 horn sst, which blows apart on animals but they alwys drop on the spot. Lots of bloodshot meat too. I took a goat last fall using 110 accubonds. I put 4 into the goat before he called it quits. 2 went clear through and I found 2 under the hide. I am experimenting with 80gr ttsx right now. Flat trajectory is what this cartridge is all about. I sight in 3" high at 100 and am about 8" low at 400. I have been putting ballistic reticles on most of my rifles but didnt feel the need to on my lastest 257. I would hunt grizz with this caliber if I didnt have better tools for the job. Buy one.
 
Update: Picked up a brand new Vangaurd 257wby yesterday. Hope to get it out to the range tomorrow. (indoor and only 50m but better than -24c!)
 
Love my Vanguard. As stated, it's heavy, but works awesome for shooting out of a tree stand overlooking a field. Bang, flop. 100gr TSX is my gun's pill of choice. I plan on a custom .257 at some point, it works great.
 
ditto! with the vangaurd reloads with the 100gr TSX push into the high 3000 fps range, and the cartgrige performed well in every hunting condition it has seen.

High velocity and a good bullet and an accrurate cartridge = great results
 
I own a 257 weatherby vanguard backcountry. Great gun, not heavy at all for me and light trigger. I'm shooting 120gr partition from weatherby. Love it.

currently i have a custom built 257wby. I have had 4 or 5 of them. I shoot 115 gr ballistic tips at 3400 fps. I have shot lots of coyotes and a handful of wolves with it and it has dropped every deer that i have shot with it and one bighorn ram. I have a CDS leupold on it and have shot stuff from 0 to 600 yards. It is a great caliber I use it as my deer/yote/wolf gun.
