Im thinking of buying one of these in a Vanguard. Price is $400 (new) which is a good deal on a solid gun. Im just wanting to know what other 257 W owners feel about this round? The gun is not available in a 25-06 so the old "get a 25-06" is moot. My only concern is the cost of brass but heard you can use 7 mag brass.
The Vanguard is only a 24" bbl I believe and eventually I would like to get a new bbl in 26". Thoughts on this set up and round????

Cheers!!

You can get the Vanguard in a 2506 with a clip. I have the same gun but stainless in 257 WBY, its awesome with 120gr Nosler Partitions @3250fps, about 10 deer now all one shot from 50yds to 440yds for the longest. Shoots around an inch 3 shots at 200 yds. Its a keeper. 24" is fine. I made brass from fresh Remington 7mm, lust lube and size, nice and simple. 264 would work too, Hornady is making brass for the 257 WBY now and 7mm WBY too. Should be no problem with brass soon.

Ive seen them for sale in 25-06 from a couple different dealers hinge floor plate or DBM. That being said 257 WBY is pretty interesting if you want that extra speed, if you want one with a 26" barrel I think you might be able to find it in a Remington 700. I see them pop up from time to time.

I was just looking at our local shop, no 25-06's. Like the idea of Hornady making brass, probably alot cheaper then Weatherby. Sounds like a cool cartridge, may have to buy it :D

Scott, as stated above making 257 Wby brass is easy, a one-step pass through the sizer with 264Win, 7Rem, etc brass. In fact that is much better brass (harder) than Norma.

And with a 24" barrel, it's easy to get 3650 with a 100 grainer. That may be a whole 50 fps less than a guy can get with a 26" tube. Anybody who talks about a 24" 257 just being a loud 25-06 due to the missing 2 inches? Safe to say they have never owned one.

I had a stainless Vanguard in the 257 a while back. It loved 100TSX bullets and RL22.

Buy it man! :)

I owned a Vanguard in .257 Weatherby and it was an excellent shooter. With factory Weatherby ammunition it was a ragged holer at 100 yards. I didn't own it for very long, so my load development didn't get very far however everything I tried in it seemed to shoot really well. Buy one - you will love it. :)

I own one in the SUB MOA model. It is a hell of a shooter. It is also very expensive to shoot/load for. I prefer the 85 gr nosler. Using a bipod, mine groups 1.5" at 300 yards, very flat trajectory. So this one is my long range varminter, to reach out and touch them, but this action comes with a price.

It is not a plinker, as the loads are pretty hot and will be a barrel burner, so to speak. For plinking I use my 223 or 243.

I'm thinking of selling her since she sits in the safe so much and my goto varmint rifle is my Savage Predator.

You can neck down 7mm Rem Mag in one pass, BUT Frontier sells Weatherby brand .257 Weatherby factory loads for $45 a box. I'd go that route.

I've heard of soft Norma brass, but have found the exact opposite myself.

As for the .257s effectiveness, don't make me pull out the truckload of deer picture again.;)
