just bought a 257 stw. barrel looks good no barrel damage to see with the naked eye. bought with out doing homework looking for good load and bullet for deer that will not fragment read rumors of triple shocks petels coming off at high velocities. help would be appreciated.

You can try swift A-frames, they come in 120 grs... That is probably about as a solid of a bullet as you can get for the .25 cal

The A-frames also come in 100 grs....

I know Russell sports in Calgary carries them

3800+ fps with a 100gr will be hard on the meat and hard on your barrel..... I personally think 257 STW is too much velocity for deer.... 257 Wby Mag is more than enough... but too each their own.

With that much case capacity I would be going for the heaviest bullets with the highest BC possible. Better in the wind than the light bullets and at the velocities you will be able to drive them, plenty flat enough.

just shoot Barnes TSX, they will hold up better than an Aframe, and outshoot it too for accuracy more often than not. Much more available too

Well if premium bullets aren't holding up.... then thats probably a sign that there is too much velocity in the STW for a reasonable hunting rifle..... sometimes there is just too much velocity...

I was using 75gr X in a .257 Wby, chronographed at just under 4000 fps. I shot numerous deer and culled a couple of boar and the petals didn't break off.

I have no doubt that the A-frame would be fine too.

Early X bullets did indeed have a "petal dropping" issue. I haven't heard of any problems in the last few years (since the introduction of triple shocks, as a matter of fact), and they work well in my high velocity rifles. As do the bonded bullets, actually. So try and find one that shoots accurately, and don't believe all the hype about STWs (yes, I own a couple). - dan

257 stw

Hi,buddy so you desided to go with the barns tsx and yes some of the early version of the x bullets did loose peddles. With speeds up to 4000fps i think it the best option.Let me know how it shoots.

jakebrake you found me your scope will be sent tomorrow this gun has sweet ballistics i will be loading it on wednesday and shooting thursday i think a brake is in order with that much powder

To each there own but im a 6mm man i like less recoil means more accurate to me. I am going to try it out first. i have shot a 375 h&h and i have decided less is more.

I actually find the noise from a brake more of a hindrance to accuracy than the recoil of most rifles.I wore both plugs and muffs to be comfortable when shooting with a brake.

that and the felt concusion but i like the feel of my hat being blow off my head my bro has a 240 weatherby one of my favorite guns put a brake on it took out all the barrel jump that it had but like you said noise!
