Anyone use the .257 25cal Hornady 120gr HP for big game? Their manual claims it is intended for big game, but the hollow point makes me wonder.

I'm thinking about trying them in my 257Roberts.

Any thoughts or experiences??

I understand they were designed for big game with the 25-06 sized case, IIRC. Given that, I have a 25-06 that will get fed 115 Partitions for big game, if they shoot well.

Don't let the HP fool you. They are defintely a big game bullet. I used to use them in my 25-06 Husqvarna years ago and they worked just like they are supposed to on sheep and caribou.

It was also the flattest shooting and one of the most accurate bullets I tried.

I have just acquired another 25-05 (Stevens 200) and will be getting some more of the 120 HPs.

I aked Hornady a few years back about this bullet, becasue a friend wanted me to load them for him .
Hornady stated that gale HHornady designed it for elk hunting in the 25/06.

I have since loaded it for quite a few people in 25WSSM, 25/06 , etc. and it works super on elk , moose , and deer.

I used them in a M70 fwt .257. I had it "long throated" and extended the magazine and replaced the follower. You'll need to do the same on most 257's since that bullet will not seat deep enough to stay within industry standard length. It has a very long ogive. Good bullet for deer though.

Shot some big bodied Mule deer and whitetail over the years. It works. I'd use it for elk without hesitation, bearing in mind the caliber more than the bullet.

Accurate as well.

Thats in a Husquvarna Ted !

Sort of an odd configuration for a BG bullet. Funny that you don't hear more about it given it's good report from users and the fact that it's priced at about $20/100 at WS and Russels.

My 257Roberts is in a long action with longer throat. The longer bullet shouldn't be a problem.

Check the NB game regs as well. I lived in Alberta years back , and hollow point bullets were not legal for big game, period. They may have changed the regs after the invention of the Barnes X...

Hollow points illegal for big game? I don't think they have ever been illegal, and certainly are not today.

FMJ is illegal for hunting big game, but not HP.

some years back I used them in rem 700 25-06 the gun was a tack driver. These bullets came apart at max volicity and cost me a loss that was not acceptable.I never used them again

I am interested in what happened. Never had anything but complete pass-throughs and instant death when I used them.
