26" or 28" what is better for Waterfowl hunting??

I just wanted to know if there is an advantage to have a shorter or longer barrel for duck and goose hunting? just wanted to know if 26" would have many advantages if any i do know that it is going to louder.i currently own an 870 mag with a 28" barrel it works great! Im asking because im currently looking for a new shotgun and haven't decided if i want a 26" or 28"

2 inches mean nothing. (I'm trying to convince my Wife that)

On the whole, I prefer shorter overall length, but in a waterfowl gun you want a longer barrel. It has nothing to do with pass shooting, more velocity, tighter patterns or more reach. It's putting that blast as far away from your ears as possible. Some people talk about longer sighting planes, I've never noticed any difference. The one thing a longer barrel does have for some people is comfort. Alot of people feel they shoot better with more weight over the front, that's about it. By the way, my shotgun has a 26 inch pipe. :)
 
Well for me a 26" tube work better. When I bought my Extrema 2 I had them bring out a 26" & 28" barrels for me to try, I swung both and decided with the 26". Go to your dealer and just try different barrel lengths on the gun you want to buy, that is of course they have both lengths in stock. Its like anything else in the gun world, what works for me may not work for you. People can give there personal input (like me) which is great, but try it for yourself and get what fits & feels best for you. Just my 2 cents.

barrel lenght has little to anything to do with pattern that is where the choke and or choke tube comes in. turkey guns come as short as 22" and can put 90% of a loads of sixes in a 30" circle at 40 yds with an extra full tube.

like the other guys said a longer barrel might give you a better sight plane or help balance out the gun. I personnally like a 28 but have switched over to a 26 and I still can't hit anything! basically get whatever fits and feels the best to you.
 
depends on what the action is- a double or single is considerably shorter in the action and can use a longer tube and steill end up with roughly the same length- however, for pass shooting- it wasn't that long ago we all had 30 or 32 inch barrels- i use a remmy 1100 in 28, but that's the way it came from the factory
 
I use a Remington 1187, and a 26 inch barrel. I find that with the already long receiver of a semi-auto I don't need anything longer than 26" for sighting plane. Then again, a 28" would be OK too. In the end it comes down to what you are comfortable with. My Browning O/U sports a 28" barrel, and I use that for upland, and waterfowl. The gun is not very long even with a 28" barrel. Best of both worlds.
 
there is a huge difference between how a short barrel swings and how smoothly a 28" barrel swings. the long sight plane makes a noticeable difference in accuracy as well.
that said i dont think the difference between 26-28" will be that noticeable.
 
I have been picking up some guns lately and 26 inch feels the best for myself i totally agree with you all it is a personal preference and there is a big difference in the way they feel i was surprised that there was. So when i buy my gun it will be a 26 barrel for sure. Now i have to decide which gun i like the browning Silver and the SX3.Decision decisions
