260, 6.5x55, or 6.5 creedmore

Pick up a cheap T3 re barrel it with 6.5x47, find a used McMillan or B&C, sell the factory stock and barrel, yodave trigger spring and you have a hell of a rifle for cheap.

I bought a Tikka t3 in the swede cartridge. Love it. Was tempted by the 260 and 6.5cm but already had dies and some brass. No regrets with my choice.

I'm thinking of a new rifle as a bench toy for myself and in a few years, as a first rifle for my oldest. Out of the 3, which would you choose? Rifle will probably be a tikka. I'm leaning towards the 6.5x55 right now.

Competed with 6.5s and have shot LR with 6.5s for years... covered the bases and love them all.

Are you planning to build the rifle or just pick one of the shelf?

As a range toy, how many rds per year do you plan to shoot?... yes, it really matters

For hunting, "in a few years", is your kid(s) going to be engaging game beyond 300yds?

What type of distance do you plan to shoot at while at the range?

There are F Open competitors who do very well at 1000yds with the 6.5X47L... as have those with the 6.5X284. The difference between the smallest and largest options with a 140gr type bullet is 200'ish fps.

The bore life can be as much as triple.. of course how fast you run any case will greatly affect the end result but the best accuracy for most mid sized cases is typically near full throttle so...

If this is going to be a range rifle AND there is a good chance the family will want to join, consider a match barreled bench set up for now.... and then go back to the hunting set up in a few years when the kids want to head into the field.

It is just a simple barrel swap... and besides, if you used the factory barrel as a range toy, it will be replaced by the time your kids want to go hunting

So....

6.5X55, commercially probably more available.

The inner me, prefer to call it the "Krag" - not the Swede.

That is what we used to refer it to, it was developed jointly between Norway and Sweden.
Norway was under Swedish rule at the time.
Story goes, it was Norway that developed it.

That would be confusing with many of the .30-40 Krag's still in use.

I have always been concerned with the throat length with the 6.5 X 55. I have heard there is differences between manufacturers. Lighter bullets in a long throat my be an issue.
I do like the 6.5, it is more like the Roberts that the others.

Not too worried about barrel life. Im not a high volume shooter. Im just looking for an off the shelf rifle, most likely a tikka.

Consider... if not reloading, the best choices for performance target ammo is currently the 6.5 Creedmoor. Neither the 6.5 Swede nor 260Rem are blessed with alot of match ammo options. The 6.5X47L also has some very nice choices BUT is not available in an off the shelf rig.

The 6.5 CM is ubber popular right now with many factory rifle makers jumping on board... more choices is always a good thing.

But nothing wrong with the Tikka... great rifle but chamber choice can limit options for off the shelf unless you reload.

Don't you Norwegians have better things to do than nitpick the 6.5x55 Swedish Mauser? Like assassinating the Swedish king with a button fired from a muzzleloader? :D

Buy the tikka it is a great rifle .I lucked out last summer and picked up a t3 hunter model 6.5 55 at clear out pricing . it is a keeper and shoots very well with a variety of bullets and powders .I love the rifle and its been a real easy rifle to develop loads for .

Ja vi elsker ... :)

Swdes and Norwegians do really have a love/hate relationship. Probably rooted in the union times and the "theft" of sections of Norway. :)
