260 or 308 for deer hunting?

Deer are thin skinned and not very tough critters. The 260 is plenty enough gun but if you dont own a bigger cal. and have a moose or elk hunt in the future a .308 might be the better choice. If its just a deer gun, give the 260 a go.

Cheers!!

Ah f&ck I forgot my gun, ammo, and tag at home and now I'm 8 hours north of my house. Who'd have thought I'd forget the only 3 things I really absolutely NEED to hunt.

Oh wait, no its all right here because the FIRST thing I put in my truck is my gun case with my rifle, fancy handloads and hunting tags inside of it because theyre really the only 3 things i absolutely need to go hunting

Both are great for deer. I'm a 260 fan but I have had a 308 before too. The 260 will have less recoil and better ballistics than 30 cals, if using 130 or 140 grain bullets. The new 100 grain ttsx in 6.5 would be a sweet deer load, fast and the ttsx bullet with a mv over 3000 fps would have an awesome impact on a deer, I'd bet.

For an average hunting situation which could include walking, stalking I would pick up the 308. Everything else being equal it makes a bigger hole.

That said one of my fav stand rifles is a 250-3000 :)

Bambi ain't that tough. Anything from .243 Winchester to 8 x 57 will do it nicely. As noted a bunch of times, placement is far more important, so chose the one you can shoot the best.
