I'm in the process of learning to load berger VLD bullets in my 1:8" twist savage bolt gun.I have a E-mail into Berger for help on data.I have kind of cross referenced the 142Smk data for Imr-4350 against the 140VLD.Now Im second guessing that after doing some reading online berger seems to max out there load at 40.5 or so.Is this because of the use of 2.800" standard length of this cartridge?I can seat my 140`s out to 2.920" in my gun giving me more room for powder no?
Also the pic below from my lyman manual for the two 140 bullets with imr-4350 is confusing as well with the max grains difference.
so in your opinions what should I me loading the 140 bergers to with the given products in the pictures below.(I also have H-1000)
I have some Hornady spire point pictured that I have no data for as my Hornady manual is a older one.So any listings for those for plinking would be great as well
















 
Different bullets will give you different pressures, that's why you'll see the different manufacturers posting different min and max data. I'm not home right now, but I can email a picture from the Berger book if you want later today.

I've had the best luck with Varget in my 260, although I do have a very good target load with H-1000.
I was using the 139gr Lapua Scenars for target loads. (try these, very good target bullets)
50 gr of H-1000, case capacity is maxed, and this resulted in very low SD. 3-4fps if I recall correctly.
The velocity is low, 2645, but very accurate.
As with any info you read on reloading, start low and work up.
 
I used 4831SC in my 6.5-08 (basically 260 Rem). Never really had any luck with 4350.

If you have access to 4831SC try working from 44-48gr with the 140VLDs

Use a chrony to get into the 2850fps range.
 
I always cross reference with a number of manuals and online sources. I start low and work up to the max looking for pressure signs or where I hit the speed I want.

47gr of h4831 gets me 2810 with 140 VLD type bullets out of my 26" bartlien barrel. I need a sporter weight 260 to go with my heavy.
 
I shoot a Tikka t3 in a 260 Rem,here is a few of loads .these might not be safe in your firearm so you no the drill
140 Sierra Game King ,38 grains of VIHT 540,CCI 250 primer,C.O.L 2.670 (this a great load in my rifle)
140 Berger VLD, 41 grains of VIHT 160,CCI 250 ,2.905
130 Berger VLD, 41 grains of VIHT 160, CCI 250 ,2.905
125 Nosler Partition,42.5 grains of IMR 4831,CCI 250,2.810
123 Sierra HPBT,43.5 grains of H4350,CCI 250,2.835
123 Lapua Scenar HPBT,44 grains Reloader 17,CCI 250,2.795
120 Barns TSX Boattail,44.5 grains of H414,CCI 250,2.705
 
Ok so I'm not shooting a 260 but I'm shooting a 6.5 x swede
I understand your question and after a few years I've found a few ways to assist in the learning .
First go to www. Reloadersnest.com
find your 260 and you will find a lot of loads .
My 264 x 55 like rl22 and (max load is 46 but )I load 49 and have been to 51
i have extended the bullet into the lands but .020 th
make a dummy round ( no powder or primer)
Then seat the bullet either .010 or .020 into the lands on your rifle is a good start .
Then make sure it will cycle in your maginzine and auction .
also make sure you have enough casing hanging onto the bullet .
i believe you should be able to load 1 grain less than a 6.5 x 55
you will need to work up to your max .
Go into some is the f class forums they will tell you what max is then start 4 grains lower and work up in half grain .
