260 Rem the skinny please!

No big bore yet as I don't really have a need for one in S. Ontario, even with an occasional moose trip to N.W. Ontario or Quebec. The 30-06 or the 300 RUM handles that nicely
 
H4831sc is the powder for me in the 260 Rem, although I use H4350 with the 130 gr. TSX hunting load.

I use RL15 or Varget with 87-107 gr. loads.

the groups on the right were shot with my custom 260 Rem, with 95 gr. Hornady Vmax over Varget, 3325 fps avg for 10 shots.

Damn nice targets... 95 grain V-Max should be wicked on wolves. How many grains of RL19 for that load T/B? Chilly will be frothing at the mouth for that data.
 
I use Varget with the 95 Vmax, not RL19

I'd list my charge but its a bit over max. btw my previous 22" factory mtn rifle barrel could not touch this speed. Best I got was 3150 fps.

with RL19, Alliant lists 49.0 grs. Max with the 100 gr. Sierra HP.

well just picked her up and man is it a nice rifle! It was manufactured in 1999 and is pre J lock with the wide trigger. The entire receiver is scroll engraved which will be a shame to cover with mounts but oh well. Has a nice light feel and fairly light contour barrel with recessed crown. The S/S mag is beefy and adds a considerable amount of weight. PICS NEXT
 
I've been shooting 260 in my 700BDL and 26" Ron Smith barrel 1-8 twist, since Oct of 2001. I started with sizing 308 brass before there was any factory 260, but now 260 brass is readily available.

I tried a lot of loads but always come back to my original one of a 140gr Hornaday A max, with 41.5 H4350. Gives me a chronographed velocity of 2770fps.

It has been an extremely accurate rifle and maintains 1/2", 5 shot groups WITH witnesses;) out to 700m. At 800 it opens up to 1":eek: .

Do I like 260 Remington, yup.
 
well I'm hoping that this rifle can do just as good! But first its going to the operating table and getting the trigger adjusted from the factory 5lb's down to about 1 1/4 lbs. I really like the wide trigger it came with. I'm going to run a factory box of 120 BT's through it to start as a measuring block against my hand loads. Then proceed with 100 BT's, 120 BT's and 130 TSX's. Its getting top quality glass and rings so I can't wait to post its groups. If not inside 3/4" @ 100 the facotry stock is going and a new HS or Hogue is getting installed.

surely you mean half MOA 5 shot out to 700M, not half inch 700 yard groups :)

No, really, honest, 1/2" at 700yds:D :D 5 shots. I was standing and the target was moving, during a windy day, with rain.:D

OK ya caught me. It was only 1/2 MOA, 3 1/2":redface: .

I've left it with the stock Rem trigger and have no complaints. Tried a bunch of others and haven't found one significantly better for me to change. On a pull gauge it still weighs 2.5lbs but won't lift 3lb, so it's somewhere in between.
 
Yeah, its a nice gun, i know, I had it for a few fdays, and didnt want to give it up. Should be interesting to see what it does. Its pretty light for a shaver :)
 
Try hornady 100gr SP with 41 gr Benchmark OAL of 2.780.This is my first year with the 260 also the first bullet powder combo I tried.I shot 8 deer in 2 days with this combo in the old 88 with a 24" barrel. I am some pleased!

I heard it is really pretty... fancy engraving and all that... did you spunk it up good Darryl.:confused:
 
I have the exact same rifle but in 243 and if yours shoots like mine, you will be VERY pleased. I picked mine up last year off the used gun rack at my local shop for peanuts and when I got her home for the required cleaning/inspection, I figured it had to be a new gun as the barrel was spotless and the cleaning patches came out as clean as they went in. Anyways, Mine has shot awesome with everything I stuffed down the tube, from 87 grain Vmax, 95 grain sst, 100 grain BTSP, and I am going to load some 75 grain HP today and see what they do.

Good luck with the new toy, and if you don't like it, mine would love to have a new stable mate!!;)
 
Well I finally got the 260 Rem out to the range and sighted it in with the borrowed 4.5-14x50 Leupold off my RUM. I found it to be a very comfortable rifle to shoot with the factory 120 grain ballistic tips which served in getting everything dialed. I cleaned the barrel very frequently between groups with my stepped hand loads but found a winner at the very end of it all. I started at 45 grains of H4350 under a 100 grain ballistic tip and ended at 49 grains shooting a three shot group measuring 0.68" from the bipod!:eek: :cool: The trigger is set up perfectly for me and I've got to say that I'm very impressed with this factory spec rifle. Now I've got to pack some more 100's and see what it does on some dirt pigs;) I'll try and get some pic's posted of the target and the carnage.
 
that 100 Nosler BT is a pretty nice bullet, I put one through the neck of a yote a few years back, big exit hole. I used 43 grs. RL15.

Id be a bit leary about using them on a deer, unless perfect broadside lung shot. Nosler claims they are designed for medium sized game.

Should work well on gophers :D

I agree with Mark, the 100 Ballistic Tip is probably a bit fragile for deer [particularly larger deer] I would step up to the 120 if you must use a ballistic Tip. My favorite 6.5mm Deer bullet is the 125 Partition. Vey accurate in my rifles, and deadly on deer. I'm hoping to see an Accubond for the 6.5's soon!!:D :eek: :) Regards, Eagleye.
 
I cant see him using that gun, or bullet for deer, so no worries guys:)
Im trying to talk him into it, but the performance out of the box might have all by itself.
I have pics of the targets...
I'll post if its cool with chilly...
