260 Vs 7-08

The title says it all.We've done the 270 Vs 280, 260 = 6.5/55 etc. stuff.
What are the pros / cons of these two as for say 'Haggis' Jnr for stuff up to deer (or even perhaps bear) ?
I do not hand load.
 
If you don't handload or want to hunt in those portions of Southern Ontario that have a calibre restriction then the 7-08 is the way to go.
 
I second the 'you should handload.' ;)

If so, then the 260 would be more fun, in my opinion.

Otherwise, if you're stuck to factory ammo, then the 7mm is probably going to serve you better.


And forget the mausers, like it or not, they're on the road to obsolescence, you'll have a harder time finding factory ammo for those old geezers :p
 
I've got a 260. For a while, I could get factroy 125 Nosler ptn loads but they were discontinued. Darn - thet grouped MOA! Anyway, started handloading and I haven't found a combination that won't shoot MOA with a bit of fine tuning. Before spring bear hunt starts, I am going to laod up 130 Barnes TSX with H4350. Firebird here has it coming out at 2850 fps in his rem rig. That's quite formidible with that bullet. With the right presentation and range, a moose would be fair - Scandinavians do it all the time! Well, we'll see.
 
260-7-08

The last trip to the range with the 7x57 Brno got 2705 fps through the chronograph with 154 grain Hornady bullets.:eek: Not bad for a caliber that predates the 06 by around 20 years.:p
I have run some 165 grain 06 loads through the chrono that only clocked in at 2655 so I guess the 7 mm caliber will do for deer and moose.:)
 
the 260 is indeed more fun, as you have alot of bullet options from 85 gr to 160s, including some super ###y VLD match bullets.

the 7-08 is the right choice for factory load shooters

how boring is that :D

:( You're right,pretty boring :redface:
However, being as we are boring people,:rolleyes: (not to mention that my personal home / Family situation does not allow me the option of reloading, otherwise I would) I have to make the best out of what is available to me for "Haggis Jnr"
One day perhaps-------:) then the 260 ;)
 
That's really too bad. Personally, I find reloading to be almost as enjoyable as shooting. And it allows me to do a lot more of that, too.

Well, nothing improves your skills as much as shooting a LOT. If you can't reload, then I'd highly recommend you get a 22lr or 17hmr in a parallel rifle make (ie 77/22 - model 77, etc) to whatever you decide on and shoot at LEAST 2000 rounds getting comfortable with it.
