Okay, pardon the questions, but I'm a comlete hunting newb. I've read the threads about .270 vs 30-06 and the more powerful cartridges, but I haven't seen much about the .260.

What is it useful for at what ranges? How does it compare to the .270?

Thanks a bunch, guys.

It is a wonderful deer rifle. It compares quite well to a 270, and depending what bullet weight is selected it should do very similar things over similar distances. I don't own one but it should be a flatter shooting than my 6.5x55 which is downloaded for older actions that may be encountered.

I used to have a 7mm-08..took a few Mulies and a Moose with it, Great Cartridge:cool:
I now have a 260 and just took a Whitie buck with it at 200 meters..Smashing performance, bang Flop !
260 is an Awesome Deer Round:cool:

Only bartell seems to be the real fan of the .260... the rest of us seem to be able to get by with the 7mm-08... :p

Hi, not true.... I sold both my 7mm-08's to but a new Remington Mountain DM in .260 :dancingbanana:

6.5mm rocks for deer sized game... fast kills. I just went through the 260 VS 6.5x55 thing and I'd say if you are going to use factory ammo get the 260 and if you handload then get the 6.5x55. I just went with the 6.5x55 because I handlaod and I used to have one in a winchester feather weight so I know how well they work. If Canada post would do it's dam job I'd have a nice 6.5x55 Ruger M77 MkII here right now.

260 is a solid 400 yard deer rifle, which can also be applied as a large game cartridge in a pinch, as well as a varmint rifle with lighter bullets.

Compared to the 270 it recoils a bit less, is housed in shorter action rifles, and bullet weights being equal, will come up about 200 fps short of the 270. If you dont reload, I wouldnt suggest it. Better bet is to go with a 7mm-08 or 270 Win

I'd use a 7-08 or a 260..if i was a handloader (I am)

If I was a handloading :) deer hunter, i'd just go riht for the 260..

I know what you're sayin, if you're still in BC, I have the same problem my .260 M700 Titanium's somewhere out in the snow. :p I love how a foot of snow can grind the west coast to a halt eh? :D :runaway:

The .260 is a great crossover gun for Varmints to Moose. Not a lot of factory ammo is sitting on the shelves though. The short action is a plus if you are looking to shave wieght and rifle length. I would rather a .270WSM it is a more powerful option if you don't mind a little recoil.

The 260 falls into a whole lump of non-magnum calibers that are about the same in practical performance.

260/6.5x55/270W/7x57/7-08/280/308/30-06/8x57

Take your pick as to the one you like the best and there's a good chance you'll be happy with the choice. All would work well on both moose and deer with proper bullet selection.

X2:dancingbanana:
That just about sums up all arguments about caliber selection for deer and moose.

7.62mm

Yeah, but they were both Rem 788's, so they don't count... :p

Super Cub nailed it.

Every cartridge seems to have it's own set of Champions, but for all
practical purposes, any of those ( and quite a few more ) will fit the
bill nicely for a suitable deer rifle, and likely all would be reliable moose, elk, sheep and antelope cartridges as well, with intelligent bullet selection and good bullet placement. Which one is best ... NO SUCH THING. All of 'em work just fine !
