260rem build on howa action help

1:8 Twist to launch the 139-142grn pills.

17 contour or straight blank if weight is not an issue.

I would go with a 30" finished. (Wish I would have gone 30" with my current 6.5-08)

Howa action are Weatherby , not bad as an Action, build in Recoil lug with Sako extractor, also is not square on bottom, not very hard to deal with trigger, not bad choice, it got metric thread, but can be done.
Even 28" barrel for 260rem is too long, Got my 260rem in 26" compare to 20" , there velocity doesn't make a different, already chronograph at Genesee several week ago, with 140grain amax, 45grain H4831 velocity hover around 2560-2600 there is no change between two barrel length, but on my 6.5X55SM 26" barrel it got a 2810fps from 140grain amax, 47.5grain H4831.

For something like 260rem, 24" is more then plenty, we did several test couple of week ago, If you were going with something with more powder like 6.5X55SM(26" Heavy varmint 1-8twist), 47.5 grain H4831 2810-2830fps, there is no pressure sign, but if you try to do that with any more than 45grain of H4831 in 260rem, there will be pressure. I use both 140Amax for both caliber.

If you want portable than a 24" barrel will be plenty. You'll just need to use a faster powder like H4350. I run the AI version and couldn't get the speeds I wanted with H4831. Tried H4350 and haven't looked back.

You have access to those very fine True-Flite barrels where you are. I second the thoughts of CyaN1de that longer is better, and heavier is better.

1:8 twist, 26-30" and go with a contour with a muzzle diameter as fat as you can handle, and as heavy as your action and stock will accomodate. They burn lots of powder and heat up quickly. A heavy barrel will help offset that issue and minimize harmonic effects, which will definitely show more at 1000

The 260 uses excellent 139-142 grain bullets and keeping them accurate at higher speeds will be easier with a longer barrel. Few bullets work their best at cartridge "red line". Longer will allow you to maintain accuracy with a slightly higer velocity.

Dude! Get on with True-Flite! They are our main barrel supplier here in Canada. They make some of the absolute best barrels anywhere, not to mention Barnard actions, our favorite here as well and the most precise we have ever seen. Never feel that you need stuff from the USA to have the best in the world! You have in NZ some of the best there is! Be Happy, Very Very Happy!!!

talk about an ego boost, all this praise of NZ, i wont be able to get out the door soon :D

i was going to go with true flite for the barrell, they make a nice straight profile 1.01" barrell that i am looking at

im going to use a Howa Action for now though.. at a later date, and when i have more money ! .. i may look at a barnard in something enormous like .50 or .408 ... just an a manhood extension and incredible fun

havent decided on stocks yet though. that is something i will have to source from overseas ( tossing up between tac style or target style )

also as far as glass goes would anyone recommend Vortex Viper PST 6-24x50 scopes

I don't think to many people will have experience with he PST line just yet as they are not currently released. I was told June.. and I've seen some reports that that date has been pushed back to fall..

Viper scopes seem to carry a good reputation for them selves, the PST line is interesting enough that I will be wanting to try one myself.
