Picked up a pre64 model 70 in great condition with 2 boxes of original Remington
Brass. Any recommendations for bullets and powder for reloading. Probably only use it for deer and some
Target practice. Thanks Ken

I would not do to much target shooting as that cartridge has a history of been a barrel burner, that been said the 264 Win Mag has lots of power I would use 140gr partitions or 130gr accubonds, a good pair of bullets for anything except the big bears which.

Great score. Modern powders bring the 264 to life. About the fastest you should be using would be 4831. Retumbo, 7828, H1000. Thats your powder range, unfortunately H870 was discontinued decades ago.

Avoid small bullets. Stick with premium bullets 130gr +, the high speeds of small bullets will speed throat erosion. No strings of shots, for my big magnums i like taking a 22, shoot a magazine between shots to allow barrel cooling, on the centerfire.

I have had good luck with N570. Had decent groups with US869. But wasn't getting the speed that I wanted. H870 was excellent but dirty and very hard to find now. Only ever used 140gr

It is the Westerner and has only shot those two boxes. Got it from original owner, easily 95%

I also have one of them. The barrel will be stainless and less prone to throat and barrel corrosion. The 264 is capable of doing 4000 fps will heat the barrel up real quick. Let the barrel cool and it'll last a long time.

I find it funny how people still think the old 264 is a barrel burner. There are so many 6.5's out there that launch bullets the same speed and way faster that don't get the bad press. I've got several 264's and have never worried about. My 1958 winchester model 70 westerner has a stainless barrel too. I think they all did from factory. Shoot it and enjoy it.

I wonder how it would shoot with a reduced load and the 160 Hornady RN ? Would be easy on the barrel, and very deadly on game.

My understanding of the .264 was that it has a fairly short throat and bullets heavier than 120 grains needed to be seated deeply, or else a "two diameter" bullet used. The two diameter bullets are not common. Is that correct?

Speer still makes 140gr hot core bullets. It is still two diameter.

Enjoy your Westerner, I use one with handloads of 140 Sierra SBT loaded to 3250fps, only ever shot one moose, never found the bullet.
As others have said there are more powders and bullets today than ever before for the 6.5's , great time to own one.
And yes my barrel is stainless also.

i owned a 257 weatherby and a 264 winchester and both lasted less than 1500 rounds that is a barrel burner in my opinion considering a 270 will get 4000+ rounds. It all depends on how hot the loads are also. I don't no about all the new 6.5's and don't care as I do not have any at this point.
