Hey guys I'm new here and this is my first thread.I just bought a .264 win mag it is a Winchester model 70 classic spotter boss.I've heard lots of good and bad things about it like it is a barrel burner(the bad).the good is that it is a very flat flying bullet and a good deer gun.what do you guys and gals think of this caliber?thanks steve!

Prolly as good as any of the flat shooting cals. for western(long range) game, not so much to choose from between it and the .257 Weatherby, both flat shooting and rely on speed to get the job done, both overbore and somewhat hard on barrels. Keep 'em clean and don't heat up the barrel at the range, and you should be good to go for a long time. Longer barrels are best here along with some of the new slowburning powders, def. a reloaders' cartridge.
that's the key to it there!! the "barrel burner" is a lot of hipe and you would need to be using you're rifle unrealistically for this to be any kind of a factor.
I have two of them, one a Rem 700, and the other a Belgian made Browning Mauser. The Browning is on barrel #2. The Rem barrel is done and needs to be replaced. Groups have opened up to 3" or so. It used to shoot under 1.5". Probably about 800 rounds is the limit for accuracy.
It is a good cartridge and I have taken a number of moose with it using 140 Nosler Partitions. It may be a bit of an overkill for deer, but certainly works. The nice thing about the .264 is bullet selection. Lots to choose from and they have excellent ballistics. But to get good performance out of a .264WM you need a long barrel. You also need a 9 twist minimum to handle the heavy and long bullets.

It was designed around the 140(139) bullet and is at it's best using it. A 6.5 140 at 3200 is magic. 3200 is do able with the new super slow powders,factory comes close. It can be tricky to reload for,unless the the short throat is redone "normal".That's likely why manual data is so slow. The manual data is very stale as well.Mine gave a 1/2" 3-shot group at 100m doing 3150 with a 24" barrel during the load developement using Ramshot Magnum. A good case can be made for the " best long range deer cartridge".
