270/08

After using the 270 so much an now so the 308 i rekon my perfect balance would be 270/08 but hardly worth it when factory 708 chamberings are available.

Anyone had or used a 27/08 before?

Bill Leeper built me a dandy little 270 / 08 on a 700 Ti.
It started life as a 260 and had a lemon barrel out of the box.
For me it was the ideal way to go because at the time I had come into several thousand .277 bullets and had no available 270 to burn them up in.
It will do anything a 260 or 7-08 can/will do and is a tackdriver, is as easy to reload as either and makes tiny groups with any bullet weight tried so far...... thats good enough for me...

Fwiw i should of forementioned the 270 cal is minimum legal for sambar deer in Australia.

I knew there had to be a legitimate reason for this bogan tomfoolery.

It might be quite interesting on a long action, particularly if you want to shoot monometal bullets. You could seat them out long and maximize case capacity. Who knows, it might even come close to duplicating the 270 Winchester.

Saying there is no need for .277 bullets because there is .264 or .284 makes as much sense as saying there is no need for .264 because there is .257, or no need for .257 because there is .243 and .264, etc....etc....

Those of you using that logic should stick to 22LR, 30-06, 375 H&H, and 12 gauge.

The 270-08 has already been invented; I believe it was called the 277 Redding. I also believe it is an SAAMI rated ccartridge.I suspect that it wasn't a surviver due to the fact that it had the Redding name attached to it. I've often thought that if it had of been brought out by Winchester, that the 260 and 7mm-08 Remington would have never had much to stand on. I'm a 30 cal man myself, but only a fool would dismiss to popularity of the 270 Winchester in North America, and the shirt version would have complimented it quite nicely.

yeah agree with Ivor on that, barrin the north American stuff... but anyone a fool to dismiss the .270 Winchester, not many who have used and used properly have complained. and a short version would be a nice compliment!

I am a 30cal man too but just bought another.270 win because I think it just plain works. I personally have dropped several big animals including 2 moose and lots of caribou plus 2 black bears with a sweet .270 I once owned. I always hated 7mm anything, and that's why I never kept a rifle in that diameter. I saw a few spectacular failures of the 7mm early on that poisoned me on it. Been tempted to get a 7-08 once or twice , but like my 270win too much. I would consider a 27-08 though........hmmm

I think the 277dia is a good stepping point below 308. To be absolutely honest, I've always had a hankering for the 6.5x55, the thing that's always stopped me from getting one is that deep down inside, I know that the 270 is better. If I need a smaller diameter bullet, that's where I'll be going.

Aside from having a good supply of ' modern ' bullets like the Barnes and Nosler products I also have a big stash of 160 gr. CIL Kling-Kore bullets, does any of you ' old guys ' remember those ? A big blunt hard hitting bullet and it shoots surprising well in my little 270/08, actually grouping better than I expected.

I have 2 .277-08AIs and love them , Its not about what's better as everyone likes to suggest. It's about flavour

have you got pictures of the small group of the weekend at 1000 yards you shot??? you might be able to boost the sale of the idea if people can see what it is truly capable of..............
