.270 ackley inproved vs 270 win

Thank you all for the input and experience with Ackley improved. As long as it is in my budget i will probably be rebarreling my rifle this winter. I am still doing research and weighing out the options.

From the sounds of it. You guys don't think it's worth the effort. My understanding what that I'd get another 2-3 hundred FPS which I was interested in. But for what I use my rifle for, I do not need any more speed (mostly hunting). It would be mind if cool to have the AI because I've never met anyone that has one. It would be a unique rifle to own. I'm only getting 2940FPS with H4831SC and tried RL19 and got 2980FPS. But out of a stock 22 inch barrel. Using 130gn SST.

As a fan of AI's, I have never done a 270 for the simple reason that it won't git you much and don't be disappointed at the velocities you are getting. All 270 win owners used to insist they were getting 3000 fps from their firearms. Then...Chrono's became common and the truth came out. Your 2940 or 2980 is just fine and will serve you well. Personally I have used 150's in mine but these days there are several 140 grain
bullets that are worth more than just a quick look.

But to be different, sure why not. I did a 280 AI on a Rem Mtn rifle and was scorned for that. Shoots 139 Horns like a lazer. Bucks a fair bit though :)

If I was going to rebarrel a standard bolt faced rifle and wanted something different, I would look long and hard at the Weatherby 6.5 rpm. I'm hoping this cartridge catches on and hopefully comes out in .277 and 7mm versions.

hey Zach , i would look into using that RE26 for a try with few bullet weights an see how that grabs you!?
sometimes the difference with ackley or not, is like loading a min charge V a max charge, there can be 200 fps in that alone.. splits hairs with 308 v 3006 when ones max an ones min, flip that an they are noticable imo.

280 ackley factory - rebarrel option, or new gun 270wsm savage

hindsight i should of stayed with a 270win an different powders than go down the 7 rem mag rabbit hole for what i wanna do... but the 7 mag was cheap enough to deck out to a LR gun with high velocity n all that jazz

I’ve gone the 280AI route. Don’t regret it, but it is expensive. First of all the dies, if you can find them. Custom dies if you can’t. Brass is pricey as well, to fireform or to buy from factory, again, if you can find it. As far as the 270AI goes, if it strikes your fancy, then do it. But do all your research first so you won’t be disappointed later. You stated most of the reasons for doing it, that I had. But with what I know now having gone the 280 AI route, and I wanted a faster 270, I’d consider a different cartridge, such as the 270WSM, and a few others. One thing I would do FOR SURE is to put a fast twist barrel on it so you can take advantage of the heavy bullets coming out for 270’s. I currently load for 2-270’s and both of them won’t shoot 150gr lead bullets, 100 yds is good but by 200 yds they both open up to around 4” and I blame this on the twist not being fast enough.

I have one rifle that is chambered 6.5x55 AI. The gain is roughly 100/125 fps.

It does make trimming less frequent, and Lapua brass lasts a long time.
I have shot some nice groups at 1000 yards with it. [139 Scenar]

I have also shot some game, including Elk, with it. Does what I expect it to do.

A 140 grain Partition or Accubond is quite persuasive at just under 3000 fps.

NEVER ever GONNA Happen ! Maybe 100 FPS at Most ! 3000 FPS is Pretty NORMAL for a 270 Win with a 130 gr er and a 22 " tube with a NORMAL pressure Load ! Will KILL animals just the same ! jmo RJ
