.270 and the 130gr Ballistic Tip

So, recently I've been playing with a .270wsm with 130gr Nolser Ballistic Tips. I read on here all the time about ballistic tips inflicting too much meat damage at fairly high speeds.

So what's the point in making the BT in .277 in the first place? There are no SAAMI cartridges that would take advantage of a BT in .277 that I see. Nosler calls it a hunting bullet, but I'm not sold on it...

Thoughts?
 
I can not comment about 270 wsm speeds, but 15 or more years back when only limited to a few firearms, I used the BTips in my 270 win for a few years but switched to sp interlocks. I did find the BT to work, but to be 100% honest I just never took enough game with them to form an opinion 1 way or the other. The game I took with them was 1 bear and 2 deer all one shot kills. They did shoot well as I recall. At the time I had a friend that worked for Hornady and convinced me to try the iterlocks and interbond bullets, and have been sold on that since.

Also hunted with a friend that used them as a go to bullet for all game out west, elk, deer, bear, moose and was quite happy with the results in a 300 mag.

There is no doubt (as you know) with a soft bullet on bone, its going to make a bigger hole and you will loose some bullet weight to fragmentation. Only if i was hunting something that could eat me or stamp me I would worry about it!

Would be neat to find out how they faired if someone has done some testing compaired to other soft bullets.

They are very accurate in most guns but IMO too soft for game over 200 lbs.I've seen shallow surface wounds on deer shoulders and basketball sized exit holes on deer rib cages on the other extreme!They behave best well past 100 yards but not for jumpshooting deer out of beds at pointblank.......................Harold
 
Use them as they are designed - for medium to long range shooting - and you will be very happy with them.

Using bullets designed for expansion at 400+ yards at 40 paces always results in a fair bit of meat damage.
 
90% of my needs are met with Hornady Inter-locks.Used sucessfully on game up to and including one grizzly..............Harold
 
A .270 Winchester loaded with 130 gr Nosler BTs would be dynamite on antelope, wolves, and barren ground caribou, but I don't have any experience with the WSM version. I would prefer a heavier AB as a general purpose hunting bullet. Many hunters don't look past the weight when choosing bullets, and because the 130 gr bullet weight is so well thought of in the .270 and because the BT is normally pretty accurate, it continues to sell well.
 
I shoot a 270 WSM with the 140 g nosler Ballistic tips and they are absolutely devistating on deer sized animals.I recently switched to accubonds and they shoot together perfectly but I havent shot nothing with them yet. If you need a good load try 61.5g of H4350 ,federal brass ,and a CCI large rifle magnum primer under a 140g Ballistic tip. If you are using winchester brass only go with 60.5g of H4350, that is where I was just starting to show signs of pressure
