Good morning fellow CGN'ers

Going to buy one or the other...looking for thoughts or opinions on those who have these calibers!

I RELOAD, AMMO IS NOT A CONCERN

Sako A7 270WSM 24" barrel (6.6lbs)

Weatherby Weathermark 270Wby in 26" barrel (7.6lbs)

Will be used for mostly for deer hunting.

Not interested in 270 Winchester, looking for something more interesting :)

Thanks in advance!

It would largely depend more on which rifle you like. I would tend to like a lighter rifle, so would lean towards the WSM between the two.

Not a fan of any of the short mags... of the two you listed - the .270 Weatherby Magnum would be my choice. It's almost as good as the 7mm in the Weatherby or Remington version.

I've got a couple Weatherbys and one WSM. There's a lot of over-lap between between them, since they get the loads they like to shoot. Either way They both trample the Win version pretty bad.

Pick the rifle you like and don't worry about it. I seriously doubt that a deer is going to know the difference.

There's little distinctions like no free-bore is on average easier to get along with than the Weatherby throat.

I like Weatherby rifles but of those you listed I'd take the lighter one in the A7. So really just picking based on rifle weight and not cartridge at all.

Weatherby shortened the excessive throat when production left Sauer and went to Japan....50 years ago. The lengths now are quite common with others..

Sure; they shortened them to about 3/8" from 3/4s. With Weatherby's mag lengths which are shortened up in the 240, .257, 270 and 7mm you wouldn't be able to reach the lands in 100 years never mind 50. I do have one custom short throated 270 'bee with a 3.700" mag box. I can reach the lands with that one; but it stubbornly refused to shoot without taking a run at it. The other notable thing about that short throat is it would take cheapest Weatherby Spire Point factory ammo and send the 130s out the end at 3700 fps. Although admittedly fun, the pressure was likely somewhere between the ceiling and the stratosphere.

On the other hand, my 270 Wissum will reach the lands within mag length with every bullet I've tried; though I never tried them all.

Never had a magazine problem... built my Weatherbys on 700 actions...

It would not surprise me Weatherby made their magazines short on purpose though...

Used both, my fav is the 270WSM.

My Cons for the 270WBY:
The Lazermark 270WBY was incredibly finicky with ammo and I encountered a similar issue with a friend's Accumark in the same cartridge.
A downside to the Weatherby rifles, not specifically the cartridge, is the weight. Great for shooting from a bench, crappy for carrying on a long walk.
Heavy recoil for such a small bullet.

My Pros for the 270WSM:
I find great accuracy with any ammo in my rifle.
Big thump with very low recoil.
Reasonable price on shelf ammo compared to any Weatherby load.
Fits in a short action, reducing the overall weight of the rifle and higher velocities from a shorter barrel.

As for the platform, as much as I love Sako (older L61, 75, and 85), I hate the A7. It's an economy gun. I will never own one. I will stick with the 75 and 85 models.

I like the notion of the WSM for the shorter action, but depending on manufacturer (like tikka) sometimes the WSM’s more of a limited mag capacity due to theyre girth

Of the two, I would take the 270 WSM, especially in those rifle choices.

Frankly, if I was after a reasonably quick deer cartridge right now I would go with the 6.5 PRC. It gives up a tiny bit of energy to the 270 WSM but the 6.5 bullets will have a little less wind drift and the rifle will certainly have less recoil.

Buy the rifle you like. The models you picked aren’t that similar. That said the A7 isn’t very sako-esque and the weathermark not very Southgate, one should feel better. A pound of weight on a Manitoba deer rifle is inconsequential imo.
I had a .270 ‘bee, killed magpies to moose with complete confidence. Had a wsm that was finicky to load for, hard to bump a shoulder on a short fat case.
Weatherby Factory loads Are competitive in price to wsm and use Norma brass. One pass on virgin 7mm Remington mag brass and Bobs your uncle so there’s that.

It's too bad no one seems to be interested in the classic 270Winchester any more, esp for deer hunting.

Not many better for that and a whole lot don't come close. Not much will be gained from either of the choices and at greater expense.
